Gateway DX4200-09

While the Gateway might appeal to users who value storage over speed, you can find more features in PCs that cost just a little less, and more performance for just a little more. That leaves this Gateway with little to recommend it.

Plenty of room for expansion; large hard drive

Competition offers faster performance and more features

Gateway DX-4200-11

The $599 (as of 8/23/09) Gateway DX4200-11 seems like the perfect value PC for anyone on a tight budget. It's a decently powerful general-purpose PC that offers solid connectivity and upgradability compared with a number of other systems at or below...

Lots of storage and memory ; Good upgradability

Subpar general performance ; Unplayable graphics for gaming

Gateway DX4200-UB001A

We didn't love Gateway's new FX4710 performance desktop because it sacrificed extra features (say, a faster 3D card?) for the sake of plumping its memory specs. We felt the same trepidation with the $750 DX4200, but the fact is that this desktop is the...

Best overall system in its price range; 64-bit Windows Vista aids memory efficiency; largest hard drive at this price

More RAM than is immediately worthwhile.

We can forgive Gateway for cramming the DX4200 with more memory than it needs simply because its specs and overall performance are the best in its price class. Of the various do-it-all lower midrange PCs out there, this one gets our nod.

"Excellent buy!!"

Do not listen to the undereducated reviewer from cnet this Gateway is a real performer, it performs much better than the specs would seem to indicate and for only $50 more you can purchase a major piece of JUNK form HP sorry I mean real JUNK from HP...

this is a much better computer than HP or Compaq, my last 4 HP computers have all imploded and died, my Gateway is still running I have been an ELECTRONICS TECH for 30 YEARS AND THE GATEWAY IS AND ALWAYS WILL BE A MUCH MUCH BETTER computer!

"Great deal for a good computer"

I just replaced a single core 2.0 Ghz machine with 1.5 gigs of memory to this. Four cores, 1.8 Ghz, 4 gigs of memory expandable to 8.

64 bit system is a good thing. This system is available for under $350. At $500 it is a decent computer. At $350 it is a bargain. Quad cores for this price? Really?

The on board video is average at best and you only have a 300w power supply. Seen batter cases and the drive doors are hokey.

"Using this computer for 60 days now with no problems."

Ok guess I'm happy with this system or I would not have bought it. It's a good system for the money. Just get a video card that works for You.

Good storage space, like quad processor speed, ram ok, I added an addition 2 gig making a total of 6 gig in system. Excellent room for expantion on hard drive along with ram.

Don't like 300 power supply, should start with 500 watt. Most computers are used for gameing. So use 512 not a 256 video card please.

"I used this computer for 13 days of lite use, it failed"

I purchased a DX4200-09 on 2/22/09 from Best Buy and set it up the next day. On March 9, my wife could not get the computer to boot. After a call to Gateway support, they decided the computer sufered a video failure (on board video) so I returned it...

I didn't really have enough time with the machine to gain any real likes or things that impressed me too much.

I don't like the fact that the computer suffered a motherboard failure in less than 20 hours of use, and Gateway support doesn't seem to be too worried about that, and even less worried about getting a working computer back to me.

"great value and good performance"

I think this computer was well worth my money. It was cheap and will run most of the programs I want it to run. If you like to play Warcraft, this is a good computer for that. I can run it at maxed out settings (plus marcoed better ones) at 50+ fps in...

can play World of Warcraft really well, has tons of memory for Autocad programs, has a fast enough processor to be good for a few years

graphics could be better mainly in fps games (it won't play Crysis very good so don't buy it for that)
