At $850 (as of August 16, 2010), the Gateway DX4840-15 mainstream desktop is all about compromise. You get a potent PC at a palatable price, at the cost of future upgrade potential. That may not matter if your needs are simple. But you're out of luck...

Strong general performance ; Excellent value

Limited upgradability

If you aren’t the tinkering type and you aren’t interested in enthusiast-level gaming, Gateway's DX4840-15 is a fine choice, at a fine price.

Great performance and a thoughtfully designed case make this machine a serious contender in the sub-$1,000 PC class.

Speedy for the price; well-designed case; Wi-Fi connectivity; room for upgrades

Lacks Blu-ray drive and other parts found on similar Gateway model; overclocked PC from Velocity Micro offers more speed at similar price

Despite getting outclassed in the labs by the overclocked Velocity Micro Vector Campus Edition, the Gateway DX4840-15 remains a very solid choice for a do-it-all mainstream PC. It boasts a great design and delivers ample performance for the price....
