Review: Gateway's DX4870-UB2C is an affordable workhorse desktop

Gateway's DX4870-UB2C is an old-school midtower desktop that delivers good productivity performance and copious storage for a very reasonable price.

Affordable price tag ; Respectable benchmark performance ; Expansion opportunities

Relies on integrated graphics ; Poor gaming performance ; Mediocre (and nonwireless) PS/2 mouse and keyboard

The Gateway DX4870-UB2C is an old-school midtower desktop that delivers respectable productivity performance and lots of storage for an appealing price.

Gateway DX4870-UB2B

The Gateway DX4870-UB2B gives its users what they expect: the latest technology and decent power in an inexpensive desktop PC. It's what we currently recommend for general purpose computing.

Good performance in class. Internal expansion room. 6GB memory, 1TB hard drive. Dual band 802.1 a/b/g/n networking. HDMI

Smallish PSU. Not tool-less for upgrades. Bloatware. Front USB ports are USB 2.0

The Gateway DX4870-UB2B ($499.99 list) is a basic tower desktop PC that checks all the boxes on what you need from a new desktop, particularly if you already have a LCD display that you're carrying over. It's speedy for its segment, has capacious...

Gateway DX4870-UB17

With solid components, class-leading performance, and room to grow, the Gateway DX4870-UB17 is an excellent desktop on a budget.

Good performance in class. Internal expansion room. 6GB memory, 1TB hard drive. Dual band 802.11 a/b/g/n networking. HDMI

Front USB ports are USB 2.0. Low power PSU limits expansion. Bloatware

The Gateway DX4870-UB17 ($499.99) is the latest budget desktop we've seen from the company with the cow print on its logo. It's a fine replacement for the six-year-old PC you're thinking about replacing, particularly if you have no need for a...

Gateway DX4870-UR11P

While it could have benefited from a stronger GPU, the Gateway DX4870-UR11P breezes past its mainstream consumer desktop peers thanks to its mighty processor, all while nipping at the heels of beefier entry-level gaming desktops.

Robust quad core processor power. USB 3.0. Integrated Wi-Fi. Decent expandability

300W PSU limits GPU upgradeability. Heavy on the bloatware. Somewhat pricey for its class

Budget NAS foundation

Great box for NAS/HTPC build. Gateway reliability history is not the best in my personal experience and Consumer Reports agrees. Mobo is Acer branded so hopefully reliability will be improved but only time will tell.

6 SATA on mobo (rare in this price range) ; Room for a 2x5.25" to 3x3.5"HDD cage (see Newegg item N82E16817993064 or N82E16816701003) gives total of 5 x 3.5" HDD and a sixth can be added if you are creative. 2nd generation i3 processor easily handles...

Have to sacrifice the optical drive for the extra HDD bays if you want to max out the SATAs but this is a good tradeoff for my situation. Gateway reliability is suspect. BIOS was fiddly to configure for OS other than the factory-installed win8 but I...

Great budget PC

My "cons" are so minor I couldn't bring myself to take an egg off.

Inexpensive ; Lots of upgradability ; Standard parts (cheap and easy fixes) ; No "security strip" keeping you out of the machine

Keyboard & Mouse are cheap ; Power supply is only 300w ; No physical recovery media
