HP Pavilion dv4t Review: Sub-$500 Winner?

The HP Pavilion dv4t notebook brings satisfactory performance and a good keyboard to the table for a street price of less than $500. What could be improved with this no-frills laptop? We take a look

Good keyboard ; Solid performance ; Overall good value

Glossy plastic galore ; Poor speakers ; Loud touchpad buttons

The Pavilion dv4t can be custom configured with a backlit keyboard, a larger 9-cell battery, a faster processor as well as more RAM and hard drive space; doing so will push the price over the $500 mark

HP Pavilion dv4-2165dx

Editors' note: This review is part of our spring 2010 retail laptop and desktop roundup , which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.

Excellent performance, components for its cost; long battery life.

Extended-life battery pack adds to weight and size; no Bluetooth.

The excellent-performing HP Pavilion dv4-2165dx has a long battery life for the money, but it'll cost you some portability.

HP Pavilion dv4-2155dx

Editors' note: This review is part of our Spring 2010 Retail Laptop and Desktop roundup , which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.

Excellent performance and components for its cost; built-in mobile broadband support.

Subpar battery life; no Bluetooth.

A fast hard drive and a peppy processor help make HP's Pavilion dv4-2155dx a solid mainstream laptop, as long as you don't need good battery life.

HP Pavilion dv4-2045dx

Editors' note: This review is part of our 2009 Retail Laptop and Desktop Holiday Roundup , which covers specific fixed configurations of popular systems found in retail stores.

Nice design with good port assortment; excellent performance for the money.

Below average battery life; no Bluetooth.

As long as you're not looking for extremely long battery life, the HP Pavilion dv4-2045dx is a well-rounded mainstream budget laptop with above average looks and performance.

HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx

Editor's Note: This laptop is a special fixed-configuration model offered only at the Best Buy retail chain.

Decent all-around performer ; Good battery life

Big battery makes it a bit clunky ; Slightly narrow touchpad

Bigger, better, faster, more: This notebook expands upon HP's all-purpose Pavilion dv3 while undercutting the price.

HP Pavilion dv4-1465DX

Editors' note: This review is part of our Back-to-school 2009 Retail Laptop Roundup , covering specific new configurations of popular laptops that can be found in retail stores.

Near all-day battery life; Special Edition imprint finish helps it stand out from the crowd without being garish; competitive application performance; includes small Media Center remote control.

Massive 12-cell battery is heavy and awkward; lacks 802.11n Wi-Fi; glossy touch pad is uncomfortable.

If you're the restless type, or simply away from electrical outlets for the majority of your day, you'll love the long battery life of the HP Pavilion dv4-1465dx. Be warned: such battery life requires you to tote a laptop that's roughly a pound heavier...

HP Pavilion dv4-1430us (Staples)

With its sleek white and silver finish and generous selection of multimedia features, you'd never peg the HP dv4-1430us ($749.99 list) as a budget notebook. This attractive 14-inch notebook offers copious amounts of memory and storage, HDMI and eSATA...

Affordable. Generous storage and memory. Stylish design. Great feature set

Low-res screen. Integrated graphics

The HP Pavilion dv4 1403us is a striking 14-inch notebook with an equally attractive price. You get a nice selection of multimedia features with this model, as well as solid productivity and multimedia performance.

HP Pavilion dv4t - Review of the HP Pavilion dv4t

Attractive design, Good productivity performance, High-quality Altec Lansing speakers, Responsive touch controls, Fast Wi-Fi throughput

Touchpad has too much friction, Relatively short battery life, Somewhat thick design

Twin Altec Lansing speakers provided very loud, room-filling sound when watching DVDs and listening to music. While streaming tunes from Slacker, songs with strong bass lines (such as Brick's "Dusic") packed a satisfying amount of thump.

HP Pavilion dv4-1540us

The HP Pavilion dv4-1540us ($749.98 Staples) is proof that you don't have to sacrifice performance, features, and style, just to save a few bucks. This portable multimedia notebook not only outperforms its more expensive competitors, it comes with a...

Great performance. Stylish chassis. Lots of I/O ports

Integrated graphics. Crapware. Low-resolution screen

The HP Pavilion dv4-1540us delivers very good performance in an attractive, travel-friendly 14-inch chassis. You get a nice assortment of ports and features with this budget notebook, but a high resolution screen would put it over the top.

HP Pavilion dv4-1543sb

I won't go so far as to call it retro, but in an age when 11- and 13-inch laptops with HD-optimized 16:9 screen aspect ratios and ever-slimmer profiles proliferate, HP's 14-inch Pavilion dv4-1543sb ($729.99 list) feels like something of a throwback—an...

Stylish design. Great keyboard. Nifty miniature remote control and multimedia suite

Integrated graphics. Could use a higher-resolution display

The HP Pavilion dv4-1543sb is a slightly chunky but not too heavy 14-inch compact with solid multimedia and productivity credentials.
