HP Pavilion P7-1235

Although much of the spotlight has lately been focused on ultrabooks and all-in-one systems, desktops have steadfastly continued to remain a viable option, especially for users on a budget. This rings especially true in the case of the HP Pavilion...

Affordable. Can accommodate some internal expansion. USB 3.0. Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. Decent integrated GPU

Sluggish performance. Loaded with bloatware. Limited discrete GPU upgradeability. No HDMI output. Monitor not included

Despite the HP Pavilion P7-1235's reasonable price tag, better systems with more nimble processing power or included monitors make for better options.

HP Pavilion p7-1225

The HP Pavilion p7-1125 makes a name for itself with decent 3D performance using integrated graphics. It's a bright spot on an otherwise run-of-the-mill tower desktop.

Some expandability. Quad-core processor. DX11-compatible integrated graphics with decent performance. Wi-Fi. 8GB of memory and 1TB hard drive

Slower on Photoshop. Bloatware. No eSATA, USB 3.0, or HDMI video ports. Only 4 USB ports

HP Pavilion p7-1235

No one tops Hewlett-Packard when it comes to flooding store shelves with affordable desktops. Cruise over to Office Depot, OfficeMax, or Best Buy, and you'll find piles of them in the $500-to-$750 range. However, HP's Pavilion p7-1235 stands out from...

One of the less-expensive big-brand towers you can buy ; Nicely equipped ; Lots of USB ports, including four USB 3.0

Torpid performance, especially for CPU-intensive tasks ; Keyboard, mouse, front panel feel cheap ; 300-watt power supply restricts upgrades

This AMD-powered minitower is very affordable and gives you room to upgrade. But it's sluggish, especially for productivity applications and other tasks that lean on the CPU.

The HP Pavilion p7-1225 is one of those desktop systems that's just a bit over the $500 entry-level price point, but also gives you a little more for your money. It has DX11-compatible 3D graphics on its AMD A8-3820 APU (accelerated processing unit, or...

Great Computer (Windows8 meh)

Windows 8 is a big change, made more for a touch screen, but I've gotten everything to work ok now. As far as the computer, it's great, I love it. I'm a net admin and usually spend more on my personal unit, but was in a hurry and had to grab something...
