Pogoplug Series 4 review

Pogoplug recently joined the cloud storage craze, and now offers 5GB of free storage to everyone in a service similar to Dropbox, Box, iCloud, and SkyDrive. Before the cloud became a buzzword, however, Pogoplug was a hardware company, and the new...

High-speed I/O thanks to SATA and USB 3.0 ports ; Small and light form factor ; Very easy setup

Irritating, buggy software ; Unreliable video streaming ; Low-res photo and video viewing ; Poorly-designed eject button

The best Pogoplug hardware to date needs a complete software revamp

Pogoplug Series 4

In an era of ever-smaller computing devices and the promise of cloud services descending from every direction, it can get a little numbing and confusing for the owner of an iPad, a smartphone, or even a laptop to figure out how to access and sync data...

The Pogoplug Series 4 is an adapter that lets you access any 2.5-inch hard drive, USB storage device, or SD card from anywhere online. It's easy to set up, attractively small, and smartly designed. Files can be accessed via browser or apps, and...

Video playback on a TV is still a weird and kludgy experience, and video formats don't all work perfectly; automated file backup isn't as smooth and transparent as on an Apple Time Capsule or other NAS device; USB 3 flash drives got extremely hot when...

The Pogoplug Series 4 is a cleverly simple device for getting files and media from your hard drive, USB drive, or SD card online and making them shareable with smartphones, tablets, and PCs. While many may find it redundant with cloud storage services,...

Pogoplug Series 4

The Series 4 supports NTFS, FAT, HFS+, EXT2, and EXT3 drive formats and works with Windows XP to Windows 7 and Mac OS 10.6.6 or higher. It works with most Web browsers, including IE8 and IE9, Mozilla Firefox 6, Apple Safari 5, and Google Chrome....

Easy setup. Affordable. Good port selection

Some video playback issues. Can't upload entire folders via the Web interface. Slow video transcoding

The Pogoplug Series 4 is a neat little device that lets you share your music, movies, photos and other files from your own personal cloud while your data stays safe at home.

"I upgraded from a "Pink" (v.2) to a v.4 & am sorry."

Originally, I had 2 x 2TB external hard drives attached to my "pink" Pogoplug. As these were newer hard drives, they were "green" therefore went into sleep mode quickly. Getting them to "wake up" created a frustrating delay.

- Version 4 software seems to be much better than previous versions.

- if Patience if NOT your Virtue, stay away from this product.

"Buggy, unreliable and slow"

Bottom line - steer clear of the Pogoplug. The people behind it are more interested in adding features without debugging core functionality, like a bug-free website and the ability to get at your files, share files or upload files without a hassle.

The Pogoplug sometimes works. The customer service is responsive to queries (although poor at solving problems). When Pogoplug works, it's great.

The website is buggy and has frequent problems. The iPhone app is buggy and frequently crashes. The Pogoplug UI is complex and confusing. You need a special drive to hook into the Pogoplug...but it's up to you to discover which one to use.

"All my files in one location"

With the demise of MegaUpload, I decided to give Pogoplug a try. Now I have all my files, movies and music in one spot--and no one can take them away from me.

Have to supply your own storage, but that's also a plus cause you can add more as needed.

"Disappointed...Very Disappointed"

I have all my music (200GB worth), some photos and some videos on a Seagate GoFlex 1.5TB drive connected to one of the USB 3.0 ports. It is extremely slow to access my music, photos & videos from my PC and my house is hardwired. I'm not running it...

Features such as 2 USB 3.0 ports, 1 SD Slot 1 USB 2.0 slot SATA connection. easy to set up the cloud and share photos (when it works).

Speed is extremely slow over a hardwired connection.

"Beware, you may lose your hard drive"

Beware-- I set up my cloud and was pretty excited about it. 5 days later, though, I tried to access one of the hard drives I had connected to it, but I was told it was unreadable. I disengaged my hard drive from the pogoplug and put it right into my...

Easy to set up cloud

May have lost the use and data stored in my Maxtor one touch hard drive

"Holy slow data!"

Overall, not as good as all the hype, but gets the job done. I realize that my data speeds are limited by my own wifi network, which has major interference issues, but still frustrating.

Better profile than the previous models. Easy to setup (MAYBE). Versatility-Compatible with drives formatted any way as opposed to most other routers that allow for attached drives.

EXTREMELY slow over wifi. My drive seems to keep dropping from the software, not seen by my medial player, and requires that it be manually unplugged/plugged back in.

Originally, I had 2 x 2TB external hard drives attached to my "pink" Pogoplug. As these were newer hard drives, they were "green" therefore went into sleep mode quickly. Getting them to "wake up" created a frustrating delay. I'm not sure how well PP...

Version 4 software seems to be much better than previous versions ; Pogoplug did offer to refund my money within 30 days of my purchase ; SD card slot is a "bonus" (I haven't tried it yet) ; USB 3 ports can't hurt (but do they matter?)

if Patience if NOT your Virtue, stay away from this product ; while optimizing video, the unit is pretty well useless. There is a huge delay accessing files ; If you have ripped DVDs on your ext h/drive(s), the PP will never finish optimizing
