Canon PowerShot S95

If you must have a camera that fits in your pocket, the Canon PowerShot S95 is the best compact model you can buy.

Beautiful image quality, even in low light. Large image sensor. Bright lens. Manual dials for a D-SLR-like shooting experience.

Expensive for a pocket camera. Price puts it close to D-SLRs and compact interchangeable lens cameras, which offer far superior images.

Canon PowerShot S95

The PowerShot S95 a small, most pocket-friendly camera that doesn't sacrifice performance to achieve its dimensions. The S95 ($400 as of January 3, 2011) is a minor upgrade to last year's highly rated Canon PowerShot S90 (it adds 720p high-definition...

Compact, pocketable size ; Control ring provides fast access to settings ; Very good image and video quality ; Easiest advanced camera to grasp for beginners ; Fun scene modes for both stills and video

Disappointing battery life ; No raised hand grip ; Slow burst mode

The PowerShot S95 is a perfect camera to grow with, thanks to its pocketable size and ultimate blend of automated and manual controls.

Group test: Canon Powershot S95, Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, Nikon Coolpix P7000

All three of these cameras share a similar design philosophy, being relatively small and compact while offering a high level of manual control. All are built to a high-quality, and all three boast high-end lenses with relatively fast aperture,...

Canon PowerShot S95 review: Canon PowerShot S95

Canon PowerShot S95

Attractive and well-designed; capable of producing very nice photos; complete set of manual controls; solid 720p video.

On the slow side, with subpar battery life; no low-compression JPEG option.

Though we'd like it to perform better, dSLR shooters looking for a sidekick camera will find the Canon PowerShot S95's top-flight photos and a full manual feature set worth the tradeoff of its compact size.

Canon PowerShot S95 Review

Canon has improved upon an already great product, with added exposure modes and features, better burst mode performance, and the addition of HD video. All combined make one heck of an awesome pocket camera. Read more in our Full Conclusion.

Well built, mostly metal body ; Good control layout ; Awesome f/2.0 lens ; Produces high-quality 10-megapixel photos ; Loads of user-friendly exposure options ; Almost unmatched degree of exposure control for a camera of this size ; Capable Smart Auto...

It's very easy to accidentally rotate the rear control wheel, which would cause exposure problems depending on the mode being used ; 400 price tag may seem steep to some

Canon PowerShot S95 review

Last year, Canon launched the S90, a camera that represented a new road in Canon's strategy. A camera which did not have Megapixels as its most important feature, and was even downgraded on paper in terms of hard specifications, but at the same time...

The S90’s quality, predecessor to the Canon S95 camera that we discussed here, was already at a high level. There were a few features, such as the position of the zoom button, which prevented smooth control of the camera. The Canon PowerShot S95 has...

Canon PowerShot S95 Review

The Canon PowerShot S95 is the successor to the popular S90, a pocket-sized camera that offers a lot of professional features. Aimed at the serious photographer looking for a capable compact, the new Canon S95 features improved handling and greater...

The Canon PowerShot S95 addresses virtually all of the issues that detracted from its predecessor - most notably the lack of HD video and sky-high price - whilst further improving the handling and customisation. Current S90 owners won't find too many...

Canon S95

In August 2009, Canon announced its PowerShot S90 -- an important digital camera for the company, because it marked a significant change in strategy. After many years spent chasing megapixels at the expense of outright image quality, the...

No-nonsense design is easily pocketed ; Bright, optically stabilized wide-angle zoom with very good image quality ; New Hybrid IS system corrects for both lateral shifts and angular motion ; Programmable control ring ; Shortcut button works great to...

Generally sluggish performance overall ; No noise reduction options ; High geometric distortion at wide-angle in uncorrected RAWs ; Moderate chromatic aberration at wide-angle ; Optical zoom not supported during movies ; Lens doesn't go as wide as some...

Though we ultimately couldn't ignore the quality of the Canon S90 despite its flaws last year, I'm happy to report that the Canon S95 is improved in just the right ways to eliminate many of the nuisances that made many of us veer off the S90. Swapping...

Technoodling Camera Showdown: Canon Powershot S95 vs. Panasonic Lumix LX-5

The adage goes that the best camera to have is the one you are carrying when you need it. It doesn't matter if your camera packs in 640 megapixels, goes up to 128,000 ISO, focuses in a nanosecond, and shoots 60 frames per second – if that camera is...

More importantly, the LX-5 gives you a hot shoe. With no hot shoe, the S95 can’t play with your other photography gear. The Lumix, on the other hand, can sync with an external flash or, with the right equipment, studio strobes.
