Canon PowerShot SX170 IS

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS delivers a 16x zoom range at a low price, but images are noisy and the camera is a slow performer.

Sharp lens. 16x zoom range. Good control layout.

Images on the noisy side. Slow performance. So-so rear display. Video capture is limited to 720p. No Wi-Fi. Not exactly pocketable.

Performance and Conclusions The SX170 IS is a relatively sluggish performer. It requires 2 seconds to start and take a photo, can only fire a photo once every 2.1 seconds in continuous drive mode, records a 0.2-second shutter lag at its widest setting,...

Canon PowerShot SX170 IS Red

The Canon PowerShot SX160 IS was one of my favorite cameras to recommend to those looking for a good-quality point-and-shoot with semimanual and manual controls that takes AA-size batteries ( and still is ). For the follow-up SX170 IS, the good news is...

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS is a good choice for budget-conscious buyers who want to do more than point-and-shoot, thanks to its semimanual and manual shooting modes and large, comfortable controls.

Despite the switch to a rechargeable battery, the SX170 is still pretty bulky and its shooting performance is too slow for fast-moving subjects like kids and pets -- especially indoors.

If you hate AA batteries, but like inexpensive compacts with manual controls, the 16x zoom Canon PowerShot SX170 IS takes a good photo. Otherwise, seek out its predecessor, the SX160 IS.

Canon PowerShot SX170 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS is an affordable high-zoom digital compact camera. It features a 16 megapixel sensor, 16x 28-448mm image stabilised optical zoom, manual modes for controlling shutter-speed and aperture, a range of digital effects, 720p HD...

The new inclusion of rechargeable lithium ion battery rather than bog standard AAs aside, the 16 megapixel Canon PowerShot SX170 IS doesn’t appear massively altered from its SX160 IS forebear. So if you like your pocket travel zooms to look a little...

Canon PowerShot SX170 IS review

A lithium ion battery improves the already impressive Canon PowerShot SX1 range

Full manual mode ; Lithium ion battery ; Easy to use

No full HD movie recording ; Can take a while to focus while zooming ; Lack of CMOS sensor

If you're looking for a point and shoot capable of a little extra then the SX170 will probably tick all of your boxes and more. Easy to use, good value for money and rugged enough to survive life's knocks and bumps.

Canon PowerShot SX170 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS was announced in August 2013 and has a 16 megapixel sensor and 16x optical zoom, all in a pocketable body.

Good battery life, Decent image quality, Easy to use menu system, 1cm minimum focusing distance, Range of creative filters

Flash doesn't pop-up automatically, Continuous shooting is slow, No outstanding / unique features

"Great camera even for a serious armature like me. "

This is my third camera in this line. I owned an SX120 and SX150 before this one. I have seven cameras including a Nikon DSLR, an Olympus ILC, and at least 3 bridge cameras including a Canon SX40 (which I use a lot....) For me the SX-170 gives me all...

Excellent zoom lens, excellent exposure metering, lots of bells and whistles for a very reasonable price.

Battery life could be better. It is a slow camera, so you have to determine what you will use it for.

"Imagestore Canon PowerShot SX170 IS Camera review"

Who says you need to dole out a fortune to own a power zoom? The PowerShot SX170 IS rewrites the equation. It is fairly priced and easy to use, and loaded with wonderful features like 16x Optical Zoom that lets you get up close to your subject for some...

What a splendid camera! The high resolution sensor just doesn't let the pictures get pixelated. Compact and very easy to manoeuvre.

The display could have been better and the layout could have been a little sharper. There's really nothing negative about it.
