Nikon Coolpix 8400 review

Imaging Resource checks out the Nikon Coolpix 8400, Nikon's latest 8 megapixel prosumer digital camera which captures pictures at up to 3264 x 2448 pixels, and comes with a wide angle 3.5x zoom, a 1.8-inch swivel LCD, and excellent battery life. Though...

Nikon Coolpix 8400 - digital camera review

Intro With a wide-angle view that equals the perspective of a 35mm-film camera's 24mm lens, or 18mm with optional converter, the Nikon Coolpix 8400 is perfect for shooting indoors in tight quarters or for grabbing shots outdoors of an exquisite...

24mm-equivalent wide-angle lens; excellent red-eye prevention; ultra-high-speed 30fps burst mode.

Distortion at wide-angle settings; viewfinder freeze/blank-out; slow raw capture.

Photo enthusiasts who favor wide-angle photography indoors or out will love the expansive view of this 8-megapixel EVF camera.

Nikon Coolpix 8400

We love the Nikon Coolpix 8400 for its wide, telescoping zoom lens, which takes impressively sharp images. If you're not looking for speed or video, this slow but sharp shooter is a very good choice.

Widest angle we've seen on a digital camera. Extremely sharp, detailed images. High-end features plus helpful tools like red-eye removal and best-shot selector.

Bulky and slow. Flash images underexposed. Smallish LCD. Subpar video mode.

Nikon Coolpix 8400 Review

The eight megapixel wide angle zoom Coolpix 8400 was announced along with the Coolpix 8800 and Coolpix 4800 on 16th September in the run-up to Photokina 2004. By it's name it's clear that the Coolpix 8400 is intended as the direct successor to the 2003...

Unique 24 mm wide-angle 3.5x zoom lens Good image quality, not quite as detailed as the best Excellent automatic white balance Good macro coverage, although perhaps soft corners & distortion Virtually no purple fringing, even when pushed Good...

Slower than expected startup time Limited latitude of image parameter adjustment No record review histogram No CF card included AF Assist lamp not effective, can not be disabled manually Visible noise from ISO 100 upwards, 7mp CCD cleaner Zoom lever...

The Coolpix 8400's unique lens makes it an interesting beast, it offers a slightly wider field of view (about 10° more; 72° horizontally at 24 mm equiv.) than other prosumer eight megapixel digital cameras which start at 28 mm equiv. That extra 10° can...

High image quality ; Very wide angle lens

Uncomfortable to hold ; Middling battery life

Relatively compact, and the standard lens offers a very wide angle of 24mm.

Nikon Coolpix 8400 Review

The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a digital camera with a rather unique selling point. The Nikon 8400 has a 24mm wide-angle lens, which is currently the widest focal length available on any compact digital camera. This does come at the...

The Nikon Coolpix 8400 is a fantastic digital camera in most respects, but frustratingly poor in a few crucial areas. As I said when I started this review, it is the only digicam to feature a 24mm wide angle lens. Other cameras offer 27mm and 28mm...

Nikon Coolpix 8400 Digital Camera Review: Intro and Highlights

Announced September 16, 2004, the Nikon Coolpix 8400 fills-in the high end of Nikon's "prosumer" lineup. It incorporates most of the features of the top-end 8800 model, minus the 8800's anti-shake system and long zoom lens. With one of the widest-angle...

Nikon Coolpix 8400

This review has been completed using a production model Coolpix 8400. Product shots have been reshot where necessary, and all sample photos are from the production camera

Very good photo quality ; Ultra wide-angle lens ; Superb build quality, save for the memory card slot cover ; Full manual controls ; Flip-out, rotating LCD display ; Very good macro mode ; LCD/EVF usable in low light ; AF-assist lamp + external focus...

Performance could be a lot better ; No memory card included ; Above-average noise, especially at high ISOs ; Included RAW conversion software doesn't take full advantage of the format ; Manual focus feature not great; no distance shown or center-frame...

Despite that, I did really like the Coolpix 8400. Most people who need the ultra wide-angle lens probably don't care about action shooting, so the somewhat sluggish performance isn't a huge deal. For people who want to capture as much of the world as...
