Olympus PEN-F Review: Retro done right

The Olympus PEN-F is retro done right: not just classic looks for the sake of tickling your reminiscence glands, but for delivering the best aspects of old gear. Launched back in January, the micro-four-thirds camera introduces several "firsts" to the...

Olympus PEN-F

The Olympus PEN-F is a svelte mirrorless camera with a retro chic design that delivers superb image quality, but could do better in terms of video capture and subject tracking.

Compact body with built-in EVF. Vari-angle touch-screen display. 20-megapixel Micro Four Thirds image sensor. 5-axis image stabilization. 50-megapixel High Res Shot mode. Quick access to filters and color controls. 9.6fps image capture. Wi-Fi.

Not weather sealed. Video limited to 1080p. No mic input. Underwhelming tracking focus system. Omits built-in flash. Wi-Fi issues in testing.

Conclusions The Olympus PEN-F wins big points for its style, build, handling, and image quality. Photos are crisp, even at higher ISO sensitivity, in-body stabilization lets you shoot blur-free images at longer shutter speeds and steadies handheld...

Olympus PEN-F review

Olympus' street-photography-focused PEN-F is the latest in the company's line of enthusiast mirrorless interchangeable-lens models, the first of its cameras to use the 20-megapixel Four Thirds sensor and a departure from the PEN line's viewfinderless...

The Olympus PEN-F is fast, delivers great photos in a streamlined body and offers a nice feature set.

The camera lacks a grip and video is not one of Olympus' strong suits. Plus, it really should be at least modestly dust- and weather-sealed for the money.

Excellent photo quality and performance and a system with tiny, fast prime lenses make the Olympus PEN-F a great camera for street photography.

Camera with lens can be difficult to hold onto with one hand. An additional grip is needed for comfort and stability ; Lens mount is almost flush with the bottom of the camera, which causes issues with larger tripod mounts and parts of the lens sitting...

Olympus PEN-F Review

The original Olympus PEN-F first hit the streets in 1963. Built around the half-frame film format, it quickly gained a following thanks to its beautiful, yet simple design and small size. Getting 70 images to a roll of film probably didn't hurt,...

History Repeating: Olympus PEN-F First Impressions Review

Olympus has brought new life – and a new face – to the famed film-era PEN series with the all-new digital PEN-F. The PEN-F is a 20MP rangefinder-style interchangeable lens camera that inherits a lot of features from the OM-D E-M5 II, including 5-axis...

The PEN-F essentially takes a brand new 20MP Four Thirds sensor and sticks in in a rangefinder-style body with the guts and specifications of the near-flagship OM-D E-M5 II. What users gain in lovely design, they sacrifice in terms of weather-sealing...

Olympus PEN-F Review

The Olympus PEN-F is a stylishly retro compact system camera that harks back to the original PEN-F film camera from 1963. The all-metal PEN-F has a 5-axis image stabilisation system worth up to 5 stops, a new 20-Megapixel Live MOS Micro Four Thirds...

The gorgeous new Olympus PEN-F takes all of the latest cutting-edge features from the company's OM-D range, throws in a brand new 20-megapixel sensor, and and houses them inside one of the most beautifully realised camera bodies that we've ever had the...

Olympus PEN-F Review

The Olympus PEN-F checks-off a lot of boxes on our list for what makes a fantastic camera. It offers excellent image quality, great performance, fast autofocus, and stylish build quality. In a decidedly retro-inspired camera, there are tons of modern...

Highest resolution Olympus 4/3" camera yet; Excellent image quality for its class; Very good dynamic range; Fast autofocus; Fast burst speeds; Lots of fun creative filter options; Built-in EVF, Wi-Fi

Expensive; No weather sealing; Mediocre battery life; No 4K video; No mic or headphone jacks

Olympus PEN-F Review: Retro But Powerful

Classic camera fans like me are prone to getting a lump in our throats with devices like the PEN-F, because they remind us of the old-school film cameras we grew up with. Nostalgia doesn't make for good photos, though, so it is fortunate that the PEN-F...

Cool retro design ; Strong 20-megapixel image quality with excellent detail and bright, clean color ; Excellent full-HD video ; Customizable buttons

Has trouble focusing in low light ; Can't record 4K video

Though the PEN-F is pricey, Olympus packed a lot of features and controls into the retro-styled body of the camera, and it offers great image and video quality.

Review: The Olympus Pen-F is a distinctive new classic

The new Olympus Pen-F is one of the most attractive digital cameras today, but is it more than just a good-looker? Check out what the new 20MP sensor, with 5-axis optical image stabilization and the new Creative Dial have to offer.

Good image quality ; Excellent 5-axis optical image stabilization ; Quick and accurate auto-focus ; Controls are readily accessible

Details smudge in low light ; Expensive in comparison

The Pen-F checks all the right boxes to become a portable camera companion. It’s clear that Olympus’ has done some of their best work on the Pen-F, and it’s a new classic for our age that would make its namesake proud.
