Olympus Tough TG-4

Olympus didn't add much to the Tough TG-4 camera aside from Raw shooting support, but it's as fine a rugged compact as its predecessor.

Wide aperture f/2 lens. Waterproof to 50 feet. Protected against freezing, dust, drops, and crushing. Speedy autofocus. Microscope macro mode. 5fps burst capture. Raw shooting support. Works with conversion lenses and macro light accessories. Built-in...

JPG output could be better. Short zoom range. Noisy lens overwhelms video soundtrack. Some shakiness to video footage. Doesn't include external battery charger.

Conclusions The Olympus Tough TG-4 isn't without issue, but it's still the best waterproof point-and-shoot that we've tested. Its wide aperture lens means that it won't have to use high ISO settings as often as competing models, and its close focus...

Olympus Tough TG-4

The Olympus Stylus TG-4 is a fantastic camera for the adventurous types, as well as any household with a pool or children. Its image quality is not what you would find on standard digicams in this price range, buts its other features are what make it...

iAuto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations ; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record ; Outstanding macro shooting mode with LED light ; Tough" features: Waterproof, Dustproof, Shockproof, Crushproof and Freezeproof...

Low ISO images were blotchy, not as sharp as we hoped ; Some noise in all images / which is typical with most smaller 16-megapixel image sensors ; Screen can be hard to see underwater ; Weak built-in flash

Olympus TG-4 Review

The Olympus Tough TG-4 adds RAW image capture and multiple fun shooting modes, helping it leap to the front of the pack of rugged compact cameras. Imaging performance is solid for its class, but where this camera separates itself is through its...

Rugged and waterproof camera body; RAW image capture; fast f/2.0 maximum aperture; fun shooting modes; fast AF speeds for its class

Heavy noise reduction, even at base ISO; no continuous RAW image capture; underwhelming video performance

Olympus Tough TG-4 Review

Though it can't go as deep as the competition, the Olympus Tough TG-4 takes the best pictures among the waterproof cameras we've tested.

Impressive image quality ; Rugged, easy-to-use design ; Lots of features ; RAW support

Not as water-resistant as other cameras ; No micro-USB port ; Easy to obstruct the lens

With a durable but simple design and impressive image quality, the Olympus Tough TG-4 is our pick for the best rugged and waterproof camera.

Olympus TOUGH TG4 review

The Olympus Stylus TOUGH TG4 is the latest in a line of water-proof rugged compacts that have been a popular favourite with outdoors enthusiasts for many years. The TOUGH TG4 retains the 4x 25-100mm equivalent of its predecessor, the TG3, along with...

Water-proof to 15 metres ; Bright f2-4.9 4x zoom lens ; RAW shooting ; Good Wifi and GPS with depth/altitude ; Great macro modes

No 60p video modes ; No HD slow motion modes ; Poor strap design

It's easy to see why the Olympus TOUGH range is so popular. Few other rugged water-proof compacts provide such a wide range of features. There are models with longer zoom ranges and others that will allow you dive deeper, but the TG4 allows you more...

Olympus adds raw to rugged Tough TG-4, tunes up 10.7x f2.8 Stylus 1s

Instead of doing full-on overhauls of its Stylus compact cameras, Olympus has been concentrating on subtle improvements. That was the case with the Stylus SH-2 earlier this year and now the Tough TG-4 and Stylus 1s.

The good news is all of these features will be bundled up in a firmware update for the Stylus 1, adding some new life to the original model, which is great because the Stylus 1s will set you back $700 (around £480 or AU$900) when it arrives in mid-April.
