Panasonic Lumix GH5S hands-on review

The GH5S is a fantastic camera for a specific user, but the standard GH5 is still the hybrid photo/video king.

Video-focused 10.2MP, multi-aspect sensor ; Waveform, vectorscope displays ; Dual native ISO ; DCI 4K at 60 fps ; Time code in/out

No image stabilization ; More expensive than GH5

Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S Review

The Panasonic GH5S is best understood as an even more video-centric variant of the GH5. We've tested it in a range of circumstances to see whether the video improvements are worth the loss of stabilization.

Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S

The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S is a new version of the GH5 with a 10.2MP sensor that's built for 4K video and native dual ISO to curb noise when shooting in dim light.

Native 4K sensor and dual native ISO for excellent low-light video quality. Same build quality as GH5. Dual card slots. Vari-angle touch LCD. Big, sharp EVF. 14-bit Raw imaging V-Log L and HLG included.

Omits in-body stabilization. 10.2MP sensor not ideal for imaging. No built-in flash. Pricey.

Bottom Line: The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5S is a new version of the GH5 with a 10.2MP sensor that's built for 4K video and native dual ISO to curb noise when shooting in dim light.

Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5

The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 is the mirrorless camera to get for 4K video, but if you're more concerned about stills, it's not a clear-cut winner.

Superlative video. Strong image quality. In-body stabilization. 10.3fps Raw capture. 4K and 6K photo modes. Sturdy all-weather build. Dual UHS-II card slots. Vari-angle touch LCD. EVF. Wi-Fi.

Focus tracking slows shooting rate. Pricey for stills-first shooters. Omits built-in flash.

If video is your primary focus, the Panasonic Lumix DC-GH5 delivers the highest quality and feature set you can find in a camera in this price range. Still shooters invested in the Micro Four Thirds system shouldn't discount it either. It delivers...

Panasonic GH5S Review

The Panasonic GH5S looks a whole heck of a lot like the GH5 which precedes it, but look closer and you'll see major changes in its imaging pipeline. The result is a camera which is less of an all-rounder, and more tightly focused on two specific...

Available from February 2018, the Panasonic GH5S is priced at around US$2,500 body-only in the US market. As befits a camera aimed at pros, no kit lenses or color options are offered.

Panasonic GH5 Review

The Panasonic GH5 is a wonderful successor to an already great hybrid still & video camera. Sporting a new 20MP sensor, faster processor, a very deep buffer, dual UHS-II SD slots, 4K video up to 60p, 10-bit internal video recording, 6K Photo mode and...

20MP sensor; Better per-pixel sharpness; Very good, slightly improved dynamic range and high ISOs; Stellar 4K video up to 60p with no crop; 6K Photo; Dual UHS-II SD slots; Good battery life for its class

Buffer is deep, but slow to clear; Expensive; Menus still confusing; No optical low-pass filter means greater risk of moire; No built-in flash
