Sony Alpha 5100

The Sony Alpha 5100 is quick to focus and features a tilting touch screen, but it can't shoot as fast as our favorite Sony mirrorless camera.

Fast autofocus. 5.9fps burst shooting with tracking focus. Strong high ISO performance. Tilting touch-screen display. In-body flash. Slim design. Wi-Fi with NFC. Downloadable camera apps. 1080p60 video.

No EVF or EVF add-on capability. Display only tilts up and forward. Lacks microphone input. Some apps must be purchased. Requires in-camera battery charging.

Additional functionality is available via downloadable camera apps. You'll need to connect the Alpha 5100 to a network in order to access the Sony PlayMemories store. Some apps carry premium prices, up to about $10, but others are free. One of the free...

Expert Review

The predecessors to the a5100 had a lot going for them: they were very compact, feature-packed, and produced good quality photos and videos. The a5100 is a much more compelling camera, taking the 'guts' from the more expensive a6000 and putting them...

Sony Alpha a5100 First impressions review

With the introduction of the a5100, Sony has officially left the NEX brand behind. The a5100 is the follow-up to the NEX-5 series, and sits above the a5000 (formerly the NEX-3) and below a6000 (which replaced the NEX-6/7). Confused yet?

What's NEX? Sony Alpha a5100 first impressions review

As Sony introduces the Alpha a5100 interchangeable lens camera, it officially leaves behind the NEX moniker its mirrorless line originated with. The a5100 picks up where the NEX-5 series leaves off, combining the 24.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor of the...

Sony a5100

Sony has announced a new ILC (interchangeable lens camera) today that replaces the NEX-5T. The new Sony Alpha 5100 (aka a5000) has been designed for families and casual photographers looking to step-up from using just a cellphone or a compact digicam....

Sony A5100 Review

The Sony A5100 is the world's smallest, lightest interchangeable lens camera with an APS-C sensor, built-in flash and Wi-Fi connectivity. Successor to the 6-month-old A5000 model, the Sony A5100 features a 24.3 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, Fast...

The Sony A5100 is proof that appearances can be deceptive. Although it looks almost identical to the previous A500 model, the new A5100 is a much more capable camera, especially when it comes to focusing and recording video. It's also a much more...

Sony A5100 Review

One of the smallest, lightest and most affordable mirrorless cameras currently offered with an APS-C sensor, and sharing the same imaging pipeline as the Sony A6000, the Sony A5100 has few rivals in terms of offering good quality for the price. It...

Very small and comfortable form factor; Very good image quality for its class; New dual video record function; Quick autofocus and good dynamic range

Lacks an EVF and external mode dial; No hot shoe; JPEG processing at higher ISOs not as good as some competing mid-level models

The Best Mirrorless Camera for Beginners

After 60 hours of research and 25 hours of testing, we think the Sony a5100 is best the entry-level mirrorless camera for most beginners.

With excellent picture quality and easy usability, the Sony a5100 is our pick for an entry-level mirrorless camera priced under $600. As simple to shoot with as a camera phone, the a5100 outshines any smartphone with images as good as you’ll see from a...

Sony a5100 Review: A Great Mirrorless Camera for Beginners

If the a51000 were a larger camera, I might ding it for the lack of features such as an accessory shoe or extra physical controls. But if that's the trade-off to get the camera so small, it's worthwhile for many people, especially novices who may not...

Pocket-size design ; excellent low-light image quality ; fast, accurate autofocus ; smooth video ; built-in tutorials for novices

Important settings buried in menus ; doesn't take external flash or microphone ; Wi-Fi not iOS friendly

Sony's a5100 entry-level mirrorless camera packs a DSLR-size sensor in a compact body, delivering high image-quality and fast shooting.

Sony Alpha A5100

First the APS-C sensor, inherited from the higher-end A6000. This means the A5100 now enjoys 24 Megapixels to its predecessor's 20, but more importantly means it also boasts the A6000's 179 embedded phase-detect AF points which allow that model to...

Potentially great quality from 24 Mpixel sensor ; Great continuous AF for photos and movies ; 6fps continuous shooting with large bursts ; Tilting touch-screen which can face subjects ; Powerful but easy to use Wifi with NFC

To exploit 24 Mpixels, you'll need a better lens ; No viewfinder nor any means to connect one ; Need to boost screen brightness for outdoor use ; Basic exposure control and no GPS tagging via Wifi ; No miniature effect for movies

The Sony A5100 is a fantastic entry-level camera for anyone who wants a step-up in quality, control and flexibility over a point-and-shoot or phone. It packs a big sensor, articulated touch-screen and seamless Wifi connectivity into a small, light and...
