Still the Point-and-Shoot to Beat

Saying you've found “the best point-and-shoot camera” is like saying you've got “the best kind of toe fungus.” It's something hardly anybody wants. We're all carrying around perfectly capable cameras on our smartphones, so if you're going to recommend...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 is an enthusiast compact camera based around a 20MP 1" CMOS sensor. It features a Zeiss-branded 28-100mm equivalent F1.8-4.9 stabilized lens featuring Zeiss T* coatings to minimize internal reflection. The rest of its...

Excellent image quality and solid ISO performance ; Class-leading movie features and quality ; A good degree of customization puts your favorite settings at your fingertips ; Fast operation, including focus and Raw capture ; Flexible lens range (though...

Clickless control dial contributes to vague and unengaging shooting experience ; Flash metering is unpredictable ; Lack of ND filter can limit the ability to use wide apertures ; Screen hard to see in direct sunshine, despite WhiteMagic technology ; No...

The RX100 is probably the most capable compact camera on the market today, combining the image quality benefits of a mid-sized sensor with the proportions of a conventional compact. Extensive, though not flawless, manual controls make the RX100 a great...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 review

Sony may be a camera-come-lately with its Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 enthusiast compact, but boy, what a debut: a fast performer equipped with a relatively large sensor and a bright, fast lens, and wrapped in a small, sleek body. It seems like Sony made a...

Speed, good looks, and pretty pictures number among the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100's strengths.

The camera tends to clip bright highlights more than we typically see, and the slippery body lacks a grip. Plus, the lack of a manually triggered macro mode might put off some fans of close-up photography.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100's compact, elegant design, generally excellent photo quality, bright, fast lens, and speedy performance make a great package if you don't mind spending a little more money.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 ($649.99 direct) is the point-and-shoot camera that many an enthusiast has dreamed of. It's got an image sensor that's the same size as the mirrorless Nikon J1 and a 3.6x zoom lens that opens up to f/1.8 on the wide end,...

Large image sensor. Superb image quality, even at high ISOs. Fast lens. Customizable controls. Large, extra-sharp LCD. Virtually no shutter lag. Raw shooting support

As expensive as some D-SLRs. No EVF option, GPS, or Wi-Fi. Limited zoom range. In-camera battery charging only

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 packs a relatively huge 1-inch image sensor into a point-and-shoot body, delivering close-to-SLR-quality images from a camera you can fit in your back pocket. It's expensive, but worth it.

Sony RX100 review

Camera design is all about compromise. Great pictures ideally need large sensors and fast lenses, but this usually means a heavier burden on your camera bag or wallet. Mirrorless cameras try to...

Astonishing image quality for the size ; Solid, pocketable design ; Excellent interface

Unimpressive video performance and usability ; Expensive

If you want something portable, the RX100 is impossible to beat

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 Preview

Sony has just announced its new flagship compact camera, the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100. With the world's first 1.0-inch type Exmor CMOS sensor, good for a whopping 20.2 megaxpixels, the RX100's image sensor is approximately four times larger than 1/2.3-type...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 is a feature-packed compact camera aimed at the discerning photographer. Offering an integrated 3.6x, 28-100mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* zoom lens with a fast aperture of F1.8 at the wide-angle setting, a 20.2 megapixel...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 takes a clear shot at the popular Canon PowerShot S-series and in most ways clearly beats it, resulting in the best pocket camera that avid photographers can currently buy. Sony have obviously been "inspired" by the Canon...

Sony RX100 Review

Sony's Cyber-shot RX100 takes the cake as the most premium of pocket cameras, with a much larger sensor, a very bright lens (at wide angle), excellent image quality, great performance, and enough modes and special features to keep a tinkerer busy for a...

Excellent high-ISO performance for such a compact model; Smart controls; Small body; Bright lens; 10fps full-res burst mode; Very fast shutter response; Excellent LCD

Lens flare at night; Poor rendering of yellows; Slow flash recycling; Soft corners wide open; Continuous AF mode slow to lock

Digital Camera Review: Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100

The RX100 has a lot to live up to given that you can buy plenty of decent interchangeable lens cameras for the same price. Thing is, those cameras don't fit into a pocket and can't be whipped out at a moment's notice–this Cyber-shot can. Sporting an...
