Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II

True breakthrough products are rare in consumer electronics and perhaps even more rare in the digital camera space. The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 was one of those rare products that caught the attention of casual photographers, enthusiasts and critics...

The RX100 II performs much the same as its RX100 predecessor, turning out some of the best image quality we've seen from a compact camera. With the addition of Wi-Fi connectivity and a BSI sensor, it's at the top of its class in terms of performance...

Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II

When Sony swapped the 1-inch standard CMOS of the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 for a BSI (backside-illuminated) sensor in the DSC-RX100 II, I expressed some skepticism. My experience with BSI sensors has always been that what they gain in low-light latitude...

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II delivers excellent photos, speedy performance, and a broad feature set in an attractive, compact package.

The camera tends to clip bright highlights more than we typically see, and the slippery body lacks a grip. Plus, the lack of a manually triggered macro mode might put off some fans of close-up photography.

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II's combination of looks, speed, flexibility, and photo quality makes it a great choice for enthusiasts who can afford the price tag.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II compact camera offers a few worthwhile upgrades when compared with the original RX100, but comes in at a higher asking price.

Excellent high ISO performance. 1-inch image sensor. Wide aperture lens. Customizable controls. Large, tilting LCD. Minimal shutter lag. Raw image capture. Wi-Fi. Hot shoe with EVF support.

Very expensive. Limited zoom range. In-camera battery charging only. Could be sharper at the edges of the frame at 28mm.

The RX100 II doesn't have a viewfinder built-in, but unlike its predecessor you can opt to add one. It supports the same EVF as the RX1 and HX50V. It's an expensive ($450) accessory, but it's an excellent EVF that serious shooters will want to consider...

Sony DSC-RX100M2 Preview

Last summer (2012), we previewed the Sony DSC-RX100, which was then the "world's first 1.0-inch type Exmor CMOS image sensor." For summer 2013, Sony has upgraded the RX100 as the DSC-RX100M2 (or Mark II). Both RX-series cameras have a 20.2 megapixel...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II Review

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II is a premium compact camera aimed at the keen enthusiast photographer. The RX100 II offers an integrated 3.6x, 28-100mm Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* zoom lens with a fast aperture of f/1.8 at the wide-angle setting, a new...

The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II is undoubtedly a better camera than the original RX100, both in terms of features and image quality, but it's also a lot more expensive than the original model, which continues to be sold as part of the premium...

Sony RX100 II Review

Sony has once again raised the bar for advanced compact cameras with the RX100 II. Building on the wildly popular RX100, the RX100 II adds a tilting rear LCD screen, flash/accessory hot shoe, built-in Wi-Fi, and a backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor for...

New, 20.2MP, 1-inch type, backside illuminated (BSI) image sensor produces superb image quality, with particular improvements in low light and high ISO; 3-inch tilting rear LCD screen handy for composing shots from difficult angles; Fast all-around...

Bigger and heavier than previous model; More expensive than previous model; Reduced burst performance when shooting RAW files; Somewhat confusing menu structure and control layout; Wi-Fi features can be difficult to set up.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II

The hot shoe that allows for the addition of accessories catapults this camera into enthusiast territory. Such accessories include external flashguns, an electronic viewfinder and a remote trigger, though each of these adds to the cost of the camera....

Camera Review: Sony Cyber-shot RX100 II

You may want to put down your big DSLR rig for this high-quality pocket camera.

Excellent still and video quality for a pocket camera; very fast autofocus and shot-to-shot speeds; surprisingly good at high ISOs in low light; small form factor lets you take it anywhere; handy, tilting, 3-inch rear display
