Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S review: Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S

Compact design; fast response times; two continuous-shooting modes; strong battery life.

Small LCD screen; limited manual settings; photos exhibit a slight softness; wrist-strap hook gets in the way.

Less expensive than the flagship Cyber Shot DSC-S90 but sharing many of its features and capabilities, the entry-level Sony Cyber Shot DSC-S40 provides a good value in a point-and-shoot camera.

Sony Cybershot DSC-S90 Digital Camera Camera

Sony's $300 4.1-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-S90 is a well-priced point-and-shoot camera that offers many of the features found on its higher-priced sibling, the 7.2-megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-W7.

In burst mode, the S90 can take four successive shots at fine resolution, or 30 shots at VGA resolution. By comparison, at VGA resolution the Cyber-shot DSC-W7 can take 100 shots in burst mode. Perhaps most disappointing is the S90's limited shutter...

Sony Cyber-shot S90 Review

Despite some speculation when announced in February 2005, the S90 is not the successor to the highly-rated S85, but is one of two near-identical entry-level four million pixel cameras from Sony (the other being the S60; the main difference is that the...

Good clean results with excellent color and decent resolution Virtually no purple fringing Good dynamic range Fast focus, generally responsive operation Easy to use and good handling Good movie mode (MPEG) Fairly low noise at ISO 400 Excellent battery...

No aperture or shutter priority mode Results a little soft No manual/custom white balance mode Flash recycle slow unless batteries very fresh, red-eye mode adds long delay Small amount of chromatic aberration - not visible in normal shots Accessing...

After nine years of reviewing compact digital cameras it's sometimes surprising I can find anything new to say about them. But such has been the pace of development over the last few years that virtually every new model has at least

Sony Cybershot DSC S90 review

Sony decided at the beginning of this year that it was time to introduce a complete new line of digital cameras and thus Sony came out with the new S-series of digital cameras during the PMA (digital Imaging event in the U.S.A.) in February 2005. The...

The Sony Cybershot S90 is a digital camera that is easy to operate when working with it. Straightforward, with a resolution of 4 Megapixels and a 3x optical zoom plus an excellent movie recording function on board, the Sony S90 offers an outstanding...

Sony CyberShot DSC-S90

Small, compact, and easy on the eyes with its matte-silver plastic body, the new Sony DSC-S90 digital camera continues the more traditional digital camera styling that differentiated the W-series models from the Cyber-shot pack. The Sony S90 offers a...

Proprietary hot shoe, No PC sync port, No video recording (a fact of life with SLRs), Hand grip may be uncomfortably small for some users, Image noise slightly high at ISO 1600, RAW+JPEG option only saves fine-mode JPEGs. (But that's not a bad...

Though the LCD monitor is quite large and dominates the rear panel, Sony managed to keep all the functions necessary close at hand and easy to operate. Grab the camera in your right hand and your middle and third finger naturally grab the angled ridge...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S90

In this review I'm taking a look a the DSC-S90. How does it perform? Find out now

Very good photo quality ; Good value ; Huge 2.5" LCD is usable in bright outdoor light and in low light too ; Very good performance ; AF-assist lamp; good low light focusing ; Excellent movie mode ; Redeye was not a problem ; Support for conversion...

More manual controls would be nice ; Unimpressive burst mode ; Memory Sticks cost more than other card formats ; Except for the tutorial, bundled software is lousy ; Can't swap memory cards while camera is on a tripod

Overall the DSC-S90 gets my recommendation -- it's an impressive camera for the money. If you want to save $50 and don't mind a smaller LCD, the DSC-S60 is basically the same camera, except that it gets even better battery life.
