The PowerShot S500 features an ultra-compact and fast (f/2.8-4.9) 3x (36-108mm equivalent) optical zoom lens. The lens - with its seven-element design - also offers a wide Autofocus range from as close as two inches (in macro mode) to infinity. Canon...

For taking pictures on the fly, the S500 offers a continuous burst mode that captures up to 2.2 frames per second at full resolution. The PowerShot S500 also has a shutter speed that extends to a fast 1/2000 of a second and features a built in flash...

Canon PowerShot S500 Digital Camera Review

The Canon PowerShot S500, with its compact yet solid design, is poised to perform. With Canon's legendary optics, including a 7.4mm-22.2mm 3x optical zoom lens, and a 5 Megapixel imager (the same as on the PowerShot G5), the Canon PowerShot S500 is a grea

Size/Weight, Canon Optics, Intelligent design and button placement, Ease of use, Overall speed between shots, start,up times and shutter to shot

Small viewfinder, Cluttered LCD (with the display on), Automatic adjustment delay±, No manual Aperture option

The Canon PowerShot S500 is a great camera for a decent price. With the Canon optics on board, as well as a 5 megapixel CCD imager, it's hard to go too wrong in this price point.

Canon's five megapixel IXUS 500 digicam

HardwareZone has a review of the IXUS 500, Canon's latest 5.0 megapixel digital camera, which features the same 1/1.8-inch CCD imaging sensor found in the Canon G5 and the DIGIC processor found in the EOS 10D Digital SLR and Powershot Pro1. Besides...

Canon USA Powershot S500 Digital Camera Camera

The latest addition to Canon's popular pocket-size Digital Elph line, the $499 Canon PowerShot S500 retains its predecessors' elegantly designed, pocket-size format but adds 5-megapixel resolution.

You may need a little time to get used to the S500's dual menu system (now standard on most Canon point-and-shoot digital cameras), but you should soon grow accustomed to their logical organization and find them easy to navigate. Our one quibble with...

Canon PowerShot S500

Review: With the PowerShot S500, Canon brings its time-tested Digital Elph to the ranks of 5-megapixel, 3X-zoom digital cameras. This latest model has its older siblings' sleek, pocket-size chassis and snapshooter ease of use, both of which we still...

Attractive and functional design; pleasing photos

Small LCD; blur on the frame's left side

Though the S500 is a respectable pocket snapshot camera, its performance and its feature set make it seem creaky next to the competition.

Product Specifications

The ultimate in stylish, high performance digital photography, the Digital IXUS 500 delivers quality prints up to A3 size. With a super hard Cerabrite finish, this flagship of the IXUS range brings together uncompromising build quality and an abundance of integrated technologies in a triumph of miniaturization. A 3x optical zoom culminates 60 years of Canon optical heritage to deliver crisp, corner-to-corner clarity. A 3x optical zoom (12.3x combined) offers a wide angle of coverage, while the 9-point AiAF ensures accurate focusing, even with off-center subjects. High performance demands plenty of processing power - which is why the Digital IXUS 500 incorporates Canon's dedicated DIGIC processor. DIGIC delivers superb image quality at high speed with less drain on the battery for extended performance. iSAPS is a hidden photographer's assistant, instantly analyzing the scene and making adjustments even before the shutter release is pressed. iSAPS optimizes exposure, white balance and auto-focus settings in every shooting situation for consistently brilliant results. An Intelligent Orientation Sensor automatically rotates images before playback. Movie mode allows up to 3-minute movie clips (30 seconds in VGA mode) with sound recording, playback and 'in-camera' editing. Auto mode is perfect for 'point and shoot' situations, while Manual mode puts you in creative control. An optional waterproof case protects your IXUS to a depth of 40m. The camera prints directly to all PictBridge or Canon Direct Print compatible printers. Create beautiful, instant photo prints by connecting camera to printer and pushing the Print/Share button, which also speeds up online sharing to any Windows PC. When used with a Canon Compact Photo Printer, you can print ID photos, or a series of movie clip frames. With Canon's ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Macintosh) you can arrange albums, crop photographs and adjust image contrast and brightness.
