Canon Powershot SD1000 Digital ELPH

Both the PowerShot SD750 and the SD1000 Digital ELPH cameras build on Canon's original and iconic box and circle design, while maintaining their own individual ELPH identity. The PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH offers consumers the choice of either...

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH

There's a pleasing familiarity about the SD1000: Everything from the blocky silver case to the logical control set up is virtually identical to previous versions of the ELPH. Awesome! No steep learning curve. At 4.4 ounces, it's not exactly the...

Great minimalist design. Durable. Diminutive. Superb pictures. UI is incredibly easy to dive into-especially if one has any experience with previous ELPH models. Autofocus can be locked for manual use.

Locking autofocus for manual use is irritating. Proprietary rechargeable battery costs $60 to replace. Doesn't mount as removable drive in OSX.

Editor's Choice!

Canon PowerShot SD1000

What kind of point-and-shoot camera has what it takes to stand out from the pack? Generally, it's one that exhibits both excellent quality and nimble performance. But that's not the whole story. Other features, such as a useful and beautiful design...

Fantastic picture quality. Excellent performance. No shutter lag. Sweet styling.

Should have better video capabilities, including MPEG-4 encoding. Wide-angle lens could be wider. A bit pricey.

Although there's an incredible amount of competition in the ultracompact category, the Canon PowerShots are still the cameras to beat. And at the top of the mountain sits the PowerShot SD1000.

Canon PowerShot SD1000

The SD1000 is one of the newest editions of the ELPH series that celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. The film-based original broke the design mold with its classic “box and circle” styling. Now, the SD1000 Digital ELPH has returned to these...

7.1MP; 3x optical zoom; ultra compact

Few manual controls; high digital noise at ISO 400 and above; LCD could be more responsive

Anyone looking for a good point-and-forget digicam should put this one high on the list.

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH (Silver)

Last year marked the 10th anniversary of Canon's Elph cameras. The line started with a film camera, though the company's SD line of digital compacts still carries the Digital Elph moniker. Despite its four-digit number, Canon positions the PowerShot...

Excellent image quality; solid build quality; speedy performance; optical viewfinder; face detection.

No manual exposure controls.

Small size, excellent image quality, and a solid, though not extensive, feature set make the SD1000 a great choice for a compact camera.

Canon Digital IXUS 70 Review

Measuring just 19.4mm thick, the Canon Digital IXUS 70 is the slimmest compact camera in Canon's extensive lineup. Inspired by the original IXUS model, the new Canon IXUS 70 offers a 7.1 megapixel ...

The Canon Digital IXUS 70 is a stylishly retro, well-made, responsive point-and-shoot digital camera that successfully recalls the original IXUS design and which thankfully doesn't ...

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH Digital Camera - Full Review

Canon's new PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH has a futuristic, yet retro look that is almost identical to the original, film-based ELPH, introduced back in May 1996. In addition to its compact size and eye-catching design, the 7-megapixel SD1000 has a...

Compact, light weight, "take anywhere" camera, Responsive performance with fast start-up, good shot-to-shot speed ; minimal shutter lag, Large, bright LCD usable in very bright and very low light, Effective and accurate automatic Face Detection, Better...

No manual aperture and shutter-speed controls, Navigator ring/4-way controller difficult to operate, Auto white balance renders warm images under incandescent lighting, Fine-tuning adjustments and some scene modes buried deep within the Function menu,...

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH

Those are some nice improvements! Other features on the SD1000 include a 3X optical zoom lens, an AF-assist lamp, a VGA movie mode, and point-and-shoot operation. If you're looking for a larger LCD then you may be interested in the SD1000's sibling,...

Very good photo quality, low noise through ISO 400 (but see issues below) ; Ultra-compact, retro-styled body; available in two "trims ; Gorgeous 2.5" LCD display ; Has an optical viewfinder (a rarity in this class) ; Robust performance: fast startup...

Some corner softness; slight overexposure in test photos ; Redeye a big problem (though the tool in playback mode gets rid of most of it) ; Current zoom setting not shown on LCD ; More manual controls would be nice ; Battery life still a bit below...

Despite a few flaws, the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH is a nice improvement over its predecessor, and a great choice for those looking for an ultra-compact camera. Its combination of style, photo quality, and performance make it one of the most...

Canon PowerShot SD1000 Review and Prices

Canon has included some nice features in its PowerShot SD1000, especially considering that it is an ultra-compact digital camera. However, some image-quality problems in low-light conditions make it tough to recommend this model at nearly $300; it's a...

Thin camera body, good response times, face-detection technology, sharp and bright LCD

Image quality suffers in low light, no IS feature, MSRP is a little high, flash could be stronger

Canon Powershot SD1000 Review

Although the Canon Powershot SD1000 has a retro look similar to the original Digital Elph, it has much more in common with the excellent . Besides its looks, the SD1000 is everything the SD550 was and more.

Below avergae image noise up to ISO 400, Reliable exposure, Accurate focusing, Quit fast focusing, Nicely saturated colors, Good lens sharpness

Warm cast using automatic white-balance indoors, Short battery-life, Weak flash, Difficult to hold securely, Unusable ISO 1600, Slight corner blurrines

Product Specifications

Canon looked to the very first ELPH for inspiration when designing the PowerShot SD1000 Digital ELPH, and came up with a quintessential iteration of the icon: slim, clean-lined and fully flat. Inside, the SD1000 Digital ELPH looks only to the future: 7.1 megapixels, a 3x optical zoom and advanced DIGIC III ensure top-quality images, while focus is fast and sharp and red-eye is automatically corrected. The large and more colorful LCD screen now has a tough, anti-reflective coating that makes it as durable as it is beautiful.
