Canon PowerShot SD500

This very compact, sleek 7-megapixel digicam is amazing. Smaller than the proverbial deck of cards but about as thick, the SD500 (around $450) is truly a go anywhere point-and-shoot digicam. It slips so easily into a pocket you'll take it with you...

Incredibly small; wonderful picture quality

Relatively short-lived proprietary battery; expensive

Canon wins very high marks with this tiny camera.

Canon Powershot SD500 Digital Elph Camera

The $500 Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph is so small it fits easily in just about any pocket, leaving you no excuse for not having a camera handy when those once-in-a-lifetime baby/puppy/soccer shots happen. The resulting photos weren't our taste...

Small size Rugged body

Image quality isn't tops

The SD500's weakness is its image quality. The photos looked good overall, but in our taste tests they didn't score as well as some other compact point-and-shoots in the same price range. For example, the Fujifilm F10 significantly outscored the SD500...

Small size ; Rugged body

Image quality isn't tops

This Digital Elph has a smooth metal body and is small enough to take everywhere, but image quality could be improved.

Canon PowerShot SD500

Announced just before PMA in February 2005, the SD500 (which goes by the names of Digital Ixus 700 in Europe and IXY DIGITAL 600 in Japan) is the latest in a long line of ultra-compact 'ELPH' or 'IXUS' cameras stretching back to early 2000 (and a lot...

Excellent resolution, Very compact and pocketable, Beautifully built and all-metal construction, Excellent color and exposure, Manual (custom) white balance, Fast focus and very responsive performance overall, Good flash performance at short distances,...

Low contrast fine detail (such as foliage or hair) looks soft, AiAF focus unreliable - turn it off, Screen resolution not high enough for a 2.0-inch LCD, Some purple fringing, Slight corner softness at wide angle, Battery life when using LCD not...

It's not without reason that the IXUS/Elph range has proved so popular; the combination of size, design and materials, performance and decent image quality is a compelling one.

Canon PowerShot SD500

We really enjoyed shooting with the Canon PowerShot SD500. It has an exterior design that combines form and function more elegantly than any point-and-shoot we've ever tested. A Digic II-powered image-processing system enables the SD500 to snap a...

Very well designed; the best start-up time in its class; quick shot-to-shot performance; novel fast frame-rate movie mode.

More frequent than usual purple fringing; longish flash shot-to-shot times.

A very well-designed, 7-megapixel snapshot camera. Just don't look for advanced controls.

Canon Powershot SD500

Dubbed the "Perpetual Curve Design" by its engineers, the sleek and curvy PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH continues Canon's tradition of providing high quality digital imaging in an ultra-compact and very easy-to-use package. Departing from the linear style

Canon Powershot SD500 Digital Elph

Quick performer. Excellent image quality. Unique My Color feature. Good ergonomics. Sleek and attractive.

Macro mode did not produce good results. Flash had some problems in backlit situations.

The SD500 is a versatile, accurate, fun 7MP compact camera that performed very well on our tests and will appeal to a broad section of shooters. We like it so much, we've awarded it our Editors' Choice.

Canon PowerShot SD500 First Impressions Review

The compact Canon Digital ELPH series is bulking up; perhaps not as apparent in size, but definitely in megapixels. The Canon PowerShot SD500 has 7.4 total and 7.1 effective megapixels on its large 1/1.8-inch CCD. Besides upgrading the amount of...

The 7.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot SD500 follows in the tradition of the Digital ELPH line with its compact size and stylish look. However, this model gets a slight makeover with its rounded edges. The added comfort is a welcome feature to the ELPH...

Product Specifications

The biggest breakthrough for the slim and trim ELPH line is the increased resolution of the PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH camera. Utilizing the same CCD sensor as is found on the top-rated PowerShot S50 and G5 model digital cameras, this five megapixel model captures JPEG images in SuperFine, Fine and Normal resolution modes and is also the first model in its class to offer 640 x 480 movie recording at ten frames per second for up to 30 seconds per clip. With the PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH, users also have the option of capturing 320 x 240 and 160 x 120 movies with sound at 15 frames per second for up to three minutes per clip. The PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH features an ultra-compact and fast (f/2.8-4.9) 3x (36-108mm equivalent) optical zoom lens. The lens - with its seven-element design - also offers a wide Autofocus range from as close as two inches (in macro mode) to infinity. Canon has also extended the power and range of this camera's digital zoom to 4.1x (from a previous high on Digital ELPH Cameras of 3.6x). For taking pictures on the fly, the S500 Digital ELPH camera offers a continuous burst mode that captures up to 2.2 frames per second at full resolution. The PowerShot S500 Digital ELPH model also has a shutter speed that extends to a fast 1/2000 of a second and features a built in flash with a range of up to 11 feet and automatic, red-eye reduction and slow synch settings. The camera's sharp, clear and easy to read 1.5-inch LCD monitor even allows users to check the smallest of details thanks to a 10x playback zoom. Introducing the sleek, stainless steel Canon PowerShot S500 in its own luxurious, custom-made Coach leather carrying case. Exclusive Coach Edition metal neck strap is included for your convenience.
