Very well designed ; the best start-up time in its class ; quick shot-to-shot performance ; novel fast frame-rate movie mode
More frequent than usual purple fringing ; longish flash shot-to-shot times
For an ultracompact camera, the SD550 produced some very sharp shots (top), as you can tell from the detail above (bottom).

The Canon PowerShot SD550 ($500) is an update to the popular SD500, which was released just seven months ago (click here to read our review). There's one big change on the SD550 when compared to its predecessor, plus a few smaller ones as well. Here's ...
Excellent photo quality (though see issues below) ; Compact and very stylish metal body ; Large 2.5" LCD display (though see issues below) ; Blazing performance ; Powerful flash for a compact camera ; Very good movie and continuous shooting modes ; ...
Some corner softness ; noisy images at high ISO settings ; Redeye is a problem ; LCD resolution on the low side ; Can only record about 8 minutes of VGA video due to 1GB file size limit ; Battery life could be better ; Can't swap memory cards while ...
As you can see, the SD550's battery life is pretty average -- there are cameras that do a lot better in this area
The Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital ELPH is basically an SD500 with several small changes:
Powerful flash ; Great LCD performance ; Unlimited fast continuous shooting ; Excellent movie mode ; Fast read/write speeds ; Improved user interface ; Above average photo quality
Below average battery life ; No image stabilization ; Easily scratched body ; No manual controls ; LCD is lacking resolution ; Movies limited to 1 GB AKA 8 minutes ; Red-eye ; High noise levels at ISO 400, low-light ; Fairly slow autofocus, shot-to-shot
The Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital ELPH is probably your average stylish 7 megapixel camera with 3x optical zoom. In my opinion, it shares the flagship position with the SD700 since it has more megapixels, a larger CCD and more powerful flash.
