Powershot A540 Digital Camera

The $280 (as of 6/15/06) PowerShot A540 offers a lot of features for those who want to manually set controls such as shutter speed for full creative control. It's one of the few cameras in this class that offers full manual control as well as the usual...

Many manual controls Wide-screen mode

Low battery life Lacks exposure bracketing

The A540's battery life of 191 shots, from the two disposable AA batteries, was a little on the low side. You can also use optional AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, but these cannot be recharged inside the camera. Canon sells a kit with four...

Many manual controls ; Wide-screen mode

Low battery life ; Lacks exposure bracketing

Low-priced model offers many manual controls, a generous 4X zoom, and a wide-screen mode. But battery life was unimpressive.

Canon PowerShot A540

Manual and automated exposure and focus controls; solid image quality; robust burst mode; usable ISO 800 shots.

Long flash-recycle time; LCD washes out in direct sunlight.

Solid image quality plus manual and automated exposure controls make the Canon PowerShot A540 a nice low-cost option for snapshooters and photo enthusiasts.

Canon PowerShot A540

Canon introduces two new additions to its affordable line of point-n-shoot PowerShot cameras, the A540 and the A530. The A540 features six-megapixels of resolution together with a retractable 4x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 35-140mm (35mm equi

Canon PowerShot A540

Featuring a 6.0-megapixel CCD a 4x lens and a full range of exposure control, the PowerShot A540 is another fine addition to Canon's A-series of digital cameras. Built on the same long-tested design as many A-series predecessors, the Canon A540 offers...

Full Manual control (PASM) ; Vibrant, appealing color ; Good skin tones ; Auto white balance handles a wide range of lighting well ; Better than average exposure accuracy ; Good lens, generally low distortion ; Clean user interface ; Wide aspect ratio...

Only average speed from shot to shot ; Average shutter response at wide angle settings ; Contrast is a little high, tends to lose highlight and shadow detail under harsh lighting ; Battery life is rather short with the LCD enabled ; Unusually slow...

Canon PowerShot A540

There are a few differences between the A530 and A540 (besides the resolution) that are worth pointing out. The A530 has a 1.8" LCD, compared to the 2.5" screen on the A540. While the A540 can record movies at 640 x 480, 30 frames/second, the A530's...

Very good photo quality; ISO 200 and 400 settings are usable for small prints ; 4X optical zoom gives you a bit more telephoto power than most entry-level cameras ; Large 2.5" LCD display is usable in low light (though see issues below) ; Full manual...

Poor LCD resolution ; Some redeye ; Can only record about 8 minutes of VGA video due to 1GB file size limit ; Plastic tripod mount ; No rechargeable batteries bundled; tiny memory card included

All-in-all, the PowerShot A540 is a great choice for those who want full manual controls, expandability, and great photo quality, but don't want to spend a bundle. It's not perfect, but the positives far outweigh the negatives, so the A540 gets an easy...

Canon PowerShot A540 Digital Camera Review

Canon Powershot A540 adds Shutter and Aperture Priority Modes to the old Canon A530 as well as 6MP instead of 5MP, and continues featuring the 4x optical zoom. Also, it enlarges the LCD screen and a 16:9 widescreen resolution option. Not only that I'm...

Canon PowerShot A540

The Canon PowerShot A530 and A540 twins are updates to 2005's A510 and A520. This time, they're each equipped with the latest DIGIC II processor. The Canon PowerShot A540 features 6 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD, full manual controls, a...

Nice 4x zoom lens ; Good (not excellent) battery life ; Large LCD with good visibility ; Full manual controls with many accessories ; Unlimited, fast continuous shooting ; Fast performance ; VGA 30 FPS movie mode ; Produces good photos, acceptable till...

Low LCD resolution ; Faster shutter speeds restricted to small apertures ; Overall performance could be faster and better; especially autofocus ; Movies limited to 1 GB; around 8 or 9 minutes at the highest settings ; Redeye and ISO 800 needs some cleanup

The very affordable Canon PowerShot A540 offers 6 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD and a 4X zoom lens. The A540 offers full manual controls too, in addition to auto and scene modes - making it a good choice for most people.

"Takes very good, not great, pictures and is easy to use."

This is a sturdy camera which takes very good pictures and is easy to use.

Could use image stabilization and a faster shutter.

Product Specifications

This camera is equipped with an approximately 6.0 million camera effective pixel 1/2.5-inch Charge Coupled Device (CCD). Also, with DIGIC II, higher resolution and high-speed processing were achieved and the startup time and response time were shortened. This camera is equipped with a 4x optical zoom lens, which covers a 35mm film equivalent focal length ranging from 35 mm (Wide Angle) to 140 mm (Telephoto), and f/2.6 (Wide Angle) - f/5.5 (Telephoto) aperture. The recording pixel settings now include a "Widescreen" mode that has the same aspect ratio as 16:9 widescreen TVs for shooting wide images. Adding ISO 800 has resulted in a faster shutter speed even when shooting in dark environments. The Color Accent mode and Color Swap mode that transform colors when shooting have been added to the Special Scene mode. The new "My Colors" in the FUNC. menu is used to change the look and feel of the pictures when shooting. With the newly added "Standard", "Fast Frame Rate", "Compact", "Color Accent" and "Color Swap" modes in the movie mode, it is easier to select modes to meet your photographic purposes. In the significantly enhanced movie mode, VGA (640 x 480 pixels) movies at a full 30 frames per second can be taken continuously until the clip size reaches 1GB or the clip length reaches 1 hour. In the Standard mode, digital zoom while recording movies is available. In the Fast Frame Rate mode, very smooth QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) movies at 60 frames per second can be taken. This camera is equipped with an upgraded 2.5-inch Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). Grid lines are displayed for easier photo composition when the camera is in the Shooting mode. With the newly added Night Display, the camera automatically brightens the LCD monitor to suit the brightness of the subject, making it easier to frame the subject when shooting in dark conditions. The speed of continuous shooting has been increased to approx. 2.3 shots/sec. A function to create a folder to store recorded images by shooting date or shooting month has been newly added. Along with this, operability in playback mode has been improved by the addition of such features as a function to jump to and display the first image of each shooting date. This camera is equipped with a Print/Share button. This button lets you easily print your images and download images directly from the camera to a computer (Windows / Mac OS X) by connecting the camera directly to a direct print compatible printer or connecting the camera to the computer. A new "Print Menu", including all menus for printing, has improved camera operations for such functions as direct printing. This camera uses two AA batteries and a MultiMediaCard or an SD memory card for the recording media.
