Canon PowerShot A580

This budget digicam feels anything but cheap and offers solid performance.

Optical viewfinder ; Fast 4X zoom lens ; Good ergonomics

Settings can be confusing ; Low-resolution LCD viewfinder ; No built-in memory

Canon has assembled a good mix of ergonomics, features, and image quality, at an affordable price with the A580. And it looks, feels, and shoots like a camera that costs more than $149.

6 Excellent Entry

Canon's A-series entry-level point-and-shoot cameras are high-quality, easy-to-use, and very affordable-in short, they're a terrific value. Case in point: We were impressed with the PowerShot A590 IS's advanced features and sweet sub-$200 price. The...

Inexpensive, even for an entry-level camera. Face detection.

Fewer features than the $179.99 PowerShot A590 IS. Bulky, boring design.

The Canon PowerShot A580 is a fine entry-level point-and-shooter, but for $30 more you can get the nearly identical A590 IS, which adds image stabilization and manual controls.

Canon Powershot A580 Review

The front of the PowerShot A580 is dominated by the protruding 4x zoom lens, which is apparently inherited from earlier A series models. The zoom is motorised and spans focal lengths ranging from 5.8mm to 23.2mm. Given that the length of the...

The Canon PowerShot A580 is a worthy successor to an entire line of moderately priced, yet capable compact cameras marketed by Canon over the past couple of years. In two weeks of use, I have found basic operation to be highly intuitive, with the...

Designed for the beginner who wants a little more zoom than the typical 3x zoom entry-level camera provides, the Canon PowerShot A580 offers a 4x lens with fully automatic or semi-automatic settings, as well as 16 easily selectable shooting modes

DIGIC III image processor just like the big boys ; Motion detection to adjust ISO for best exposure ; Facial detection for portraits and to confirm those smiles afterwards ; Good body design, easy to hold and lightweight ; Good color saturation ; Good...

Difficult battery/card compartment latch ; Burned out highlights with blooming ; Poor digital zoom ; Flash washes out extreme Macro shots ; High barrel distortion ; High chromatic aberration at wide angle ; Soft corners at wide angle ; High contrast in...

The Canon PowerShot A580 has an eight megapixel CCD imager coupled with a Canon-branded 4x optical zoom lens. Images are framed on the 115,000 pixel 2.5-inch LCD display, or using the optical viewfinder. Photos and movies are stored on SD / MMC cards,...

Canon Powershot A580 Review at Imaging Resource

Canon’s inexpensive A Series PowerShot still packs a DIGIC III, providing some very advanced features. It's Easy mode makes it no problem to hand off but it does lack any manual control. Image quality was generally good, capturing natural color with...

Canon Powershot A580

I bought this little gem just because I wasnt able to afford a G7 or (better) G9. The reason why I choose this one among some other same priced options was that this one still has an optical viewfinder, like my favourite cameras (Zeiss Ikon Contax II...

Not to say problems, but this camera lacks from a real manual mode, however this loss isnt that bad. Just choose spot metering and AF spot mode and that's all. Problem solved. Anyway, I still love and shoot with the other old ladies ; Ernesto

Canon Powershot A580

Just used it a little while, but it is amazingly easy to set up (works OK right out of the box), and there is even a button you can set as you want (I use it to turn off the display, when I don't need it). Simpler to use than all my other digitals...

Well, I haven't found out how to set the exposure, yet - probably need to read the manual
