Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS

If the idea of an almost-all-touchscreen camera appeals to you, the Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS ($299 as of May 25, 2011) is one of the best point-and-shoot options in that class. But it's becoming clear that touchscreen-operated cameras are a...

3.2-inch touchscreen with good UI ; Fun shooting modes, including 240fps video capture ; F2.0 lens with aperture priority mode ; Very good image and video quality

Touchscreen menus add a few steps ; Subpar battery life

We love the touchscreen-controlled Elph 500 HS's image quality, ultra-wide-angle-lens, and range of shooting modes. We're less fond of its battery life and user interface for manual controls.

Even after spending a considerable amount of time with the Canon PowerShot 500 HS at the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan, we’re still not sure what to make of the camera. It’s got a decent design that looks nifty, but it doesn’t have anything that leaps...

Canon PowerShot ELPH 500 HS Review

Canon's new ELPH 500 HS brings a 3.2-inch touch screen together with an f/2 lens and all the trappings of the "High Sensitivity" system.

Fast f/2 lens ; Good 1080 HD video ; Very good low light performance

Finicky touch screen ; Somewhat expensive ; Bulkier, heavier than average

Manufacturers are scrambling to find a cure for a common point-and-shoot malady - noisy, blurred images in low light conditions. Does Canon manage to solve the low light problem with the 500 HS?

Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS

At the top end of Canon's wildly popular Elph compact digital camera line, sits the 12.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS. This powerhouse pocket camera features a bright, wide lens, a sharp touch-screen LCD, and excellent image quality, putting...

Very sharp images. Solid low-light performance. Attractive design. Bright, wide lens. Big, sharp, touch-screen LCD

Pricey. Occasionally laggy zoom performance

The top-of-the-line touch-screen Canon PowerShot Elph 500 HS is an excellent compact camera with an impressive spec sheet and performance to match, but it'll cost you.

Excellent camera for the money !

Excellent camera. The only two drawbacks: uses a (very expensive) rechargeable battery and way too many features for the average photographer. But all in all an excellent investment. HS SYSTEM Canon ? 12.1 M? CMOS ? DIGIC 4 Image Processor the Best !!!
