Canon USA Canon Powershot G2 Camera

When we first tested Canon's PowerShot G2 last year, it produced some of the best-looking photos we'd seen. This year we pitted the G2 against newer models and it won again, turning in the best photos in our tests, with rich colors and sharp details.

Just a couple of gripes with this camera: The mode dial seems difficult to turn, and you have to reenter some picture settings when you switch from manual to some automatic modes. The camera's rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack saw us through 373...

Canon Canon PowerShot G2 (4MP, 3x Optical, 3.6x digital)

The $799 PowerShot G2 remains one of the best choices for photographers who value flexibility and top-notch image quality. But you may want to wait for our review of the G3.

Canon PowerShot G2

The PowerShot G2 is Canon's first 4-megapixel digital camera model. The Canon PowerShot G2 Kit will be available through authorized Canon dealers in September. The G2 is based on the popular PowerShot G1, with an elegant champagne metallic coverplate and

Canon PowerShot G2

Canon unveiled the original PowerShot G1 just beforePhotokina last year (September 2000). It took quite a few people who wereexpecting a Pro70 replacement by surprise. The G1 immediately struck achord with people considering Nikon's Coolpix 990 or...

Excellent resolution (as good as the best at the time of writing this review) ; Good metering (improved thanks to the new 'evaluative metering' mode) ; Good natural light white balance, strong, accurate and balanced colours ; Good control over cameras...

Slow startup times (lens extension) ; Sharpening / diagonal line artifacts ; Average macro performance ; Zoom controller does not have enough increments / multiple zoom speed ; RAW acquire module / RAW convert doesn't have enough functionality ;...

Canon took the already successful G1, listened to the comments of reviewers and owners alike, added a four megapixel sensor, made the camera design a little more 'marketable' and came up with the G2. And the whole point is the G2 is a camera that just...

And more, as I'll describe later

Excellent photo quality ; Great bundle - 32MB card, remote control included ; Many manual controls ; Useful swiveling LCD display ; Support for CompactFlash Type II cards ; RAW mode - uncompressed images, much smaller than Tiffs ; Support for external...

Proprietary battery ; No optical zoom in movie mode ; A bit pricey

It edges out the Sony due to its support for CompactFlash Type II and the IBM Microdrive, which has a vastly higher capacity that the Memory Stick. The photo quality has also proved to be top notch -- and I plan on taking a lot more photos to make...

Canon PowerShot G2: Great Images, Advanced Controls, Four Megapixels

Offering an excellent balance of great image quality, full feature set, and compact design, Canon's first G-series camera, the PowerShot G1, was a very impressive 3-megapixel digital camera....

The camera does not work with ALL Canon Speedlights; only the new EX series. The G1 also used the same battery as the D30 which, again, is the same battery used in the G2. In other words, NOT a new battery

Canon Powershot G2

After shooting with the G2 for several weeks and then going back to my 35mm SLR, I had several impressions. First, the G2 is a fun camera! It's fairly compact and light, so I'm more likely to carry it around than my SLR (although the G2 is bulkier and...

Product Specifications

Offering the highest image quality in its class, the PowerShot G2 utilizes the latest 4-megapixel CCD to capture pin sharp pictures with every click of the shutter. With a high-resolution 3X optical zoom lens, reduced shutter interval, completely lossless RAW image recording mode and new Digital Signal Processor (DSP) and RGB filter, the PowerShot G2 is a new photographic industry benchmark. The powerful PowerShot G2 was designed for truly creative digital photographers who demand precision image capture management. Three Auto-focus modes including continuous, single and 3 selectable AF points with 12 shooting modes (including Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE and fully manual exposure control) means the G2 can always deliver exactly what a photographer requires. Advanced image capture controls include a histogram exposure graph for image evaluation (as seen on the Canon EOS D30) that allows the photographer to see if an image is correctly exposed. Early indication of excess light or darkness allows exposure settings to be changed to obtain an optimal result. The histogram is displayed on the G2's vari-angle LCD monitor that twists and swivels to provide the most convenient viewing angle and adds flexibility when shooting in difficult or awkward situations. Development didn't stop there. The PowerShot G2 uses much less power than its predecessors, which means a lot more pictures from a single battery charge. Canon engineering gives a user more flexibility to take high-quality pictures whenever and wherever they want without worrying about running low on power. The versatility of the PowerShot G2 is enhanced by a comprehensive range of optional system accessories including Canon's full range of Speedlite EX flashguns making it possible to capture images in extreme low-light conditions. For low light close-ups the G2 supports Canon's Macro Ring Light (MR- 14EX) that can be fitted over a 250D close-up lens. For long distance work, a powerful 153mm tele-converter brings a subject right into the camera while a 27.2mm wide-angle converter makes it easy to grab those wrap-around wide-angle shots. All PowerShot G2 lens converters are compatible with the standard 3.6x step-less digital zoom. This means that high-quality images can be captured at any stage of the zoom process. Nothing but the best from the world's most technologically advanced camera manufacturer!
