Canon PowerShot G6

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more.

Impressive image quality; built-in neutral-density filter; solid raw-shooting performance.

So-so performance for many operations; inexcusable lens-cap design.

A very good camera that needs a speed bump to pull ahead of the competition.

Canon PowerShot G6 review by PC Magazine

With a sleeker, more ergonomic shape, a powerful optical zoom, and a multitude of pro-level features, the Canon PowerShot G6 is a stride ahead of ...

Excellent picture qualityimages are well exposed and sharp, with great color reproduction ; a rotating 2-inch LCD ; easy-to-navigate menus for beginners ; features advanced users will like too, such as the ability to shoot RAW files

A little too easy to turn on accidentally ; maximum of just 30 seconds for movie recording at just 10 FPS ; doesn't use USB 2.0 for file transfers

Canon PowerShot G6

Successor to the popular PowerShot G5 the new PowerShot G6 was announced on 19th August 2004. At the beginning of the year it became clear that Canon wouldn't be jumping on the six megapixel 1/1.8" CCD bandwagon, instead they were holding off for the...

Good resolution (better in real life than res chart) ; Punchy color, balanced tone (good shadow detail) ; Low noise, very low noise reduction / none ; About a stop more sensitive than indicated ; Good macro performance ; Improved lens, much lower...

Shallow angle jaggies affected resolution chart ; Low continuous shooting speed with LCD on ; USB 1.1 transfer (slow) ; Heaviest seven megapixel tested ; No live view histogram ; Limited image parameter adjustment

As the successor to the popular G5 the G6 has a lot to live up to. First impressions were that Canon decided on a shift in ergonomics and design, going for a more SLR-like appearance with a larger and more usable hand grip and angled shutter release...

Canon Powershot G6 Camera

The PowerShot G6 is a compact and powerful 7.1-megapixel digital camera that should appeal to advanced photographers. It's the latest in Canon's G series, which dates back nearly five years to the original PowerShot G1. The G6 returns to a silver body...

High image quality Long battery life

No print/share button

The G6 uses an upgraded rechargeable lithium ion battery. It's the same size as the one in the G5, but Canon says it will last 26 percent longer. In our battery tests, we could take over 500 shots on a single charge, compared to 438 shots with the...

Canon PowerShot G6

The 7.1-megapixel Canon PowerShot G6 is the successor to last year's popular PowerShot G5 and is over 10% smaller. The G6 features 12 shooting modes and a new ergonomic design with all of the key controls falling under the fingertips of the right hand, wh

Canon Powershot G6 Digital Camera Review: Intro and Highlights

Canon PowerShot G6

Those are the major differences between the two. There are a few more that I'll touch on later in the review

Excellent photo quality ; Large, rotating LCD display ; Full manual controls ; Robust performance ; AF-assist lamp ; Supports conversion lenses of all types ; Hot shoe for external flash ; LCD info display ; Excellent battery life for a camera of this...

Some jaggies, softness in details in photos ; Some redeye ; Doors over battery/memory card slot still a bit flimsy ; Lens starts at 35mm (when more and more cameras are 28mm) ; No live histogram in record mode ; LCD difficult to see in low light ;...

Overall, though, I like the G6 quite a bit. If you want a high resolution camera without the noise and purple fringing issues of the 8MP models, this may be the right choice. Those with G5's probably don't need to rush out and upgrade, unless they...

Canon PowerShot G6

The best thing about the G6 is the image quality. In fact, I think the image quality of the G6 is comparable to 6 megapixel digital SLRs like the Canon Digital Rebel and the Nikon D70.

Short Report: Canon PowerShot G6

Product Specifications

Capable and versatile, the PowerShot G6 packs a vast array of advanced technology into a compact, ergonomic body, all working in concert to unleash new levels of photographic control. From the minute you pick it up, the PowerShot G6 inspires confidence. All key controls fall immediately under your fingertips and the rubberized grip makes the camera feel like an extension of your hand. Flip out the large 2.0" vari-angle LCD and you are ready for anything. The 7.1 Megapixel resolution allows detailed prints in excess of A3 size and prints without loss of detail from tight, post-shoot crops. Great in low light conditions, the fast f/2.0 - f/3.0 lens has a versatile focal length range of 7.2 to 28.8mm (35-140mm equivalent in 35mm format). An SLR-style Mode Dial allows you to call up any one of 12 different shooting modes. Two custom modes can be used to save and retrieve your favorite combination of settings. With incredible speed, Canon's purpose-built DIGIC processor executes the complex algorithms required for accurate image rendering. The result is superb quality images, more accurate focusing and metering, longer battery life and fast start-up times. Like a built-in photographer's assistant, iSAPS improves auto exposure, auto white balance and auto focus accuracy by monitoring settings and readings, and using these to interpret the shooting situation. When you need to be fast, the 9-point AiAF focuses quickly on your subject, even when it is off-center. For full control, FlexiZone AF/AE allows scrolling and selection of the auto focus point from across the frame. For total post-shoot control, the PowerShot G6 supports simultaneous JPEG and lossless RAW image recording for both flexibility and flawless 'digital negatives'. ZoomBrowser (Windows) and ImageBrowser (Mac) help manage your work, while ArcSoft PhotoStudio provides extensive image editing and manipulation options. Your PowerShot G6 is fully PictBridge and Canon Direct Print compliant, allowing it to connect and print directly to any compatible photo printer.
