Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph

Quick performer. Excellent image quality. Unique My Color feature. Good ergonomics. Sleek and attractive

Macro mode did not produce good results. Flash had some problems in backlit situations

The SD500 is a versatile, accurate, fun 7MP compact camera that performed very well on our tests and will appeal to a broad section of shooters. We like it so much, we've awarded it our Editors' Choice.

Canon Powershot SD500 Digital Elph Camera

The $500 Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital Elph is so small it fits easily in just about any pocket, leaving you no excuse for not having a camera handy when those once-in-a-lifetime baby/puppy/soccer shots happen. The resulting photos weren't our taste...

Small size Rugged body

Image quality isn't tops

The SD500's weakness is its image quality. The photos looked good overall, but in our taste tests they didn't score as well as some other compact point-and-shoots in the same price range. For example, the Fujifilm F10 significantly outscored the SD500...

Small size ; Rugged body

This Digital Elph has a smooth metal body and is small enough to take everywhere, but image quality could be improved.

Canon PowerShot SD500

Announced just before PMA in February 2005, the SD500 (which goes by the names of Digital Ixus 700 in Europe and IXY DIGITAL 600 in Japan) is the latest in a long line of ultra-compact 'ELPH' or 'IXUS' cameras stretching back to early 2000 (and a lot...

Excellent resolution, Very compact and pocketable, Beautifully built and all-metal construction, Excellent color and exposure, Manual (custom) white balance, Fast focus and very responsive performance overall, Good flash performance at short distances,...

Low contrast fine detail (such as foliage or hair) looks soft, AiAF focus unreliable - turn it off, Screen resolution not high enough for a 2.0-inch LCD, Some purple fringing, Slight corner softness at wide angle, Battery life when using LCD not...

It's not without reason that the IXUS/Elph range has proved so popular; the combination of size, design and materials, performance and decent image quality is a compelling one.

Image quality

Canon PowerShot Digital Elph

Very well designed; the best start-up time in its class; quick shot-to-shot performance; novel fast frame-rate movie mode.

More frequent than usual purple fringing; longish flash shot-to-shot times.

A very well-designed, 7-megapixel snapshot camera. Just don't look for advanced controls.

Canon PowerShot SD500

Almost the same size as the predecessor PowerShot S500 model, the new Canon PowerShot SD500 features the great looks and sharp design that are a signature of Canon's ELPH cameras. Canon refers to the SD500 as having "Perpetual Curve Design", which...

Compact size, Solid build, In-camera image stabilization makes all lenses better for low light shooting, Same sensor as 7D, Kit lens covers 18-70mm 35mm equivalent range, Very good to excellent low-light capability, Excellent battery life, Decent...

Proprietary hot shoe, No PC sync port, No video recording (a fact of life with SLRs), Hand grip may be uncomfortably small for some users, Image noise slightly high at ISO 1600, RAW+JPEG option only saves fine-mode JPEGs. (But that's not a bad...

The Canon SD500 features a 3x, 7.7-23.1mm zoom lens, equivalent to a 37-111mm zoom on a 35mm camera. Aperture is automatically controlled, but the maximum setting ranges from f/2.8 at full wide angle to f/4.9 at full telephoto. A maximum 4x digital...

Canon PowerShot SD500 Digital ELPH

When Canon set out to make an ultra compact, ultra high resolution camera, it wasn't as simple as dropping a new CCD into an existing body. The reason for that is due to the size of the CCD sensor itself: on the SD200, SD300, and the new SD400, the CCD...

Excellent photo quality (though see issues below) ; Compact and very stylish metal body ; Blazing performance ; First rate movie and continuous shooting modes ; Powerful flash for a compact camera ; Unique My Colors feature ; LCD visible in low light...

Some corner softness and purple fringing ; Redeye is a problem ; Cheap plastic door over memory card / battery compartment ; While an improvement over the other SD series cameras, battery life could be better ; Can't swap memory cards while camera is...

In case you didn't notice, I like the PowerShot SD500. A lot. If you want a lot of pixels in a small camera, this is a great choice. If you like what you've read but don't need 7.1 million pixels then the 5 Megapixel PowerShot SD400 is worth a look.
