Canon PowerShot SD990 IS review

Top Elph for the moment, the Canon PowerShot SD990 IS has the highest resolution in its family--15 megapixels--but otherwise its specs fail to impress given its price tag. That said, the SD990 delivers excellent photo quality, it offers plenty of...

Excellent picture quality; very good shooting options for its size.

Disappointing lens specs; mixed performance; high-resolution sensor adds little benefit; no HD video.

The Canon PowerShot SD990 IS is a fine ultracompact camera, but its price-to-feature benefits are questionable.

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS

What Canon's SD990 IS lacks in glamorous features, it makes up for in speed and brilliant images.

Excellent image quality. Full manual operation. Speedy boot and recycle times. Very little shutter lag.

Expensive. Somewhat bulky. Can't record high-def video. Just average noise scores.

Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS Review

The Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS (also known as the PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH in North America) is the first-ever Digital IXUS / ELPH camera to offer a true manual mode, instantly appealing to all those DSLR owners looking for a pocketable second...

In summary, the Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS / PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH can be highly recommended to DSLR owners who are in the need of a second camera that they can take along even when their main 'workhorse' has to stay at home, and also to...

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH Digital Camera - First Shots - The Imaging Resource!

Canon's PowerShot SD990 IS digital camera replaces the company's previous PowerShot SD950 IS model as the flagship of the Digital ELPH lineup, and updates the chassis with a curvier style while retaining exactly the same control layout. Overall, the...

Full-frame sensor gives 1:1 crop factor, true wide angle with 35mm lenses, Very compact and relatively lightweight for a full-frame d-SLR, Dramatically less expensive than the only other full-frame d-SLR currently on the market, Canon's own 1Ds Mark...

Full-frame, high resolution sensor is very demanding of lenses, even high-end lenses can have trouble in the corners (Plan on spending serious $$ on lenses to keep up with this body!), Color is generally good, but reds are significantly oversaturated,...

The standard ISO sensitivity range offered by the Canon SD990 IS is unchanged from the SD950, with a minimum of ISO 100 through to a maximum of ISO 1,600, plus a high sensitivity scene mode which allows this to be boosted to a maximum of ISO 3,200....

Review: Canon PowerShot SD990 IS digital camera

The PowerShot SD990 IS produces great-looking images, but the build quality feels cheap.

I expect a camera priced at around $400 to feel solid. The PowerShot SD990 IS, which has a plastic body rather than the titanium casing of its predecessor (the PowerShot SD950 IS), feels a bit cheap. This, coupled with a handful of other shortcomings,...

Canon Digital IXUS 980 IS / PowerShot SD990 IS Digital ELPH

The IXUS 980 IS / SD990 IS inherits a great deal from its predecessor including the same lens, same optical viewfinder and the same sized screen, albeit with a newer panel; the control layout is also essentially the same. New to the IXUS 980 IS / SD990...

High resolution images ; Good screen with optional viewfinder ; Great battery life with viewfinder ; Manual control over exposure

Lacking true wide-angle coverage ; No optical zoom while filming ; No HD video or HDMI port ; Modest burst mode at 1.3fps

Canon PowerShot SD990 IS Review

The Canon PowerShot SD990 IS , the latest flagship ultracompact in Canon's well-known Digital ELPH line of pocket cams, was rolled out just before the holiday buying season got underway in an effort to tempt buyers with a camera that simultaneously...

Superior build quality, styling, Quick Shot mode makes OVF shooting logical, Decent all around performance, Sensible feature set offers the stuff you need without the bloat

High-res sensor muddies up images, Lens performance, specs only adequate, LCD should be bigger for this price, Too much money for too few bells and whistles
