Canon PowerShot SX170 IS

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS delivers a 16x zoom range at a low price, but images are noisy and the camera is a slow performer.

Sharp lens. 16x zoom range. Good control layout

Images on the noisy side. Slow performance. So-so rear display. Video capture is limited to 720p. No Wi-Fi. Not exactly pocketable

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS ($179.99 direct) is a bit of an odd duck in terms of design. It's not quite slim enough to fit comfortably into most pockets, its 16x zoom lens is longer than some, but can't compare with cameras of similar size, and its...

Canon PowerShot SX170 (Black)

Editors' note: The design, features, and shooting options are identical between the Canon PowerShot SX170 IS and the SX160 IS we reviewed earlier, so readers of the earlier review may experience some déjà vu when reading the same sections below.

The Canon PowerShot SX170 IS is a good choice for budget-conscious buyers who want to do more than point-and-shoot, thanks to its semimanual and manual shooting modes and large, comfortable controls.

Despite the switch to a rechargeable battery, the SX170 is still pretty bulky and its shooting performance is too slow for fast-moving subjects like kids and pets -- especially indoors.

If you hate AA batteries, but like inexpensive compacts with manual controls, the 16x zoom Canon PowerShot SX170 IS takes a good photo. Otherwise, seek out its predecessor, the SX160 IS.

"Imagestore Canon PowerShot SX170 IS Camera review"

Who says you need to dole out a fortune to own a power zoom? The PowerShot SX170 IS rewrites the equation. It is fairly priced and easy to use, and loaded with wonderful features like 16x Optical Zoom that lets you get up close to your subject for some...

What a splendid camera! The high resolution sensor just doesn't let the pictures get pixelated. Compact and very easy to manoeuvre.

The display could have been better and the layout could have been a little sharper. There's really nothing negative about it.

Good Choice

We mainly bought this as a replacement camera for our older, larger, heavier Cannon camera. It is working out very well. No problems.
