Canon PowerShot SX280 HS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS is a powerful and compact digicam, featuring some of the latest and greatest from Canon. The powerful processor allows for the fantastic shooting modes and features to operate with ease. Full manual control gives even the...

Auto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations ; Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record ; Image Quality is excellent in all shooting modes ; Movie quality is better than most digicams ; Intelligent IS keeps images sharp in...

Small, weak flash unit isn't very helpful unless you are very close to subject ; Slightly more noise than expected, even at the lower ISO settings ; Poor battery life ; Special features (Wi-Fi and GPS) shorten the already anemic battery life

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS (Red)

With the PowerShot SX280 HS, Canon's top compact megazoom for 2013, it's all about the processor.

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS has shooting modes for every type of photographer from casual to advanced; a useful long zoom lens with excellent image stabilization; and overall excellent photo and video quality for a compact megazoom.

Battery life is short, especially if you use the Wi-Fi and GPS features or movie capture. The flash isn't in a great location, and there are no easy panorama or HDR shooting options.

Wi-Fi connectivity and a new processor help make Canon's PowerShot SX280 HS one of the top compact megazooms available. But you'd better load up on batteries.

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS Review

As much as we hate harping on the fact that smartphone usage now accounts for a large percentage of casual photography, there are still variants of the point-and-shoot camera that can hold its own. One is the megazoom or superzoom, a camera that not...

Powerful 20x zoom ; Sharp images in well-lit/daylight situations ; Nice autofocus performance ; Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS

Poor placement of built-in flash ; Noisy at high ISO settings ; Barrel distortion at wide angle

The PowerShot SX280 HS is a powerful point-and-shoot with a strong feature-set, but isn’t without some shortcomings.

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS puts 20x zoom in your pocket, along with Wi-Fi, GPS, and 1080p60 video capture. It's an ideal travel camera, and earns our Editors' Choice award.

Sharp lens. 20x zoom range. Speedy performer. GPS. Wi-Fi. 1080p60 video capture

Narrow aperture. Smudged details at high ISOs. Not the sharpest LCD

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS ($329.99 direct) is a pocket-size camera with a long 20x zoom lens. It packs a wealth of features into its svelte frame, including Wi-Fi and GPS. Images from the 12-megapixel CMOS sensor are sharp, although some details are...

Canon's uninspired travel zoom is a step in the wrong direction.

Canon Powershot SX280 HS Review

The new Canon Powershot SX280 HS is an easily pocketable compact P&S digicam with a long 20x zoom lens. The SX280 HS won't turn any heads or launch any trends. In fact, the polycarbonate bodied SX280 HS is a rather plain looking point and shoot...

20x zoom, compact size ; Finger rail grip ; Better than average noise control

Center AF only in manual modes ; Poor placement of the one touch video stop/start button ; Soft telephoto images, battery life could be better

The SX280 HS is a compact, well designed, sturdy, and easy to use point and shoot digital camera with a 20x zoom. Compared to its competition, the biggest difference would seem to be in the resolution arena with Canon sticking with a reasonable...

Canon PowerShot SX280 HS

While its rivals from Panasonic and Sony continue to push resolutions ever-higher on their 2013 pocket super-zooms, Canon has decided to stick with a relatively modest 12 Megapixels for the SX280 HS in an attempt to minimize noise. The SX280 HS also...

Slightly superior image quality to peer group, but not by much ; Broad 20x optical zoom covers every situation in pocket body ; 1080p video with zooming, stereo sound and continuous AF ; Built-in GPS and Wifi ; Fast continuous shooting up to 14fps...

No touch-screen nor the ability to move the single AF area mode ; No remote control over Wifi, only image transfer ; Convoluted quality selection for miniature videos ; No HD for slow motion video ; Can't recharge battery over USB. Need to use mains...

The Canon PowerShot SX280 HS is a good, solid super-zoom camera with pretty good control, quality and features. Sticking to 12 Megapixels has allowed Canon to deliver image quality that's a little better than its rivals without missing out on fine...

Canon PowerShot SX280

Canon's popular travel-zoom gets built-in WiFi and a healthy speed boost.

1080/60p video; 14fps continuous shooting for 7 frames; 20x optical zoom lens still competitive in market

Small body still difficult to keep steady at full zoom

A healthy update to one of the better travel-zoom cameras on the market

"Video on this camera does not work"

If you buy this camera, you are paying for a video feature that does not work. Canon knows about the problem and will not or cannot fix it. Check the reviews on Amazon if you want to see more.

Takes good still pictures

There is a known problem with video on this camera. As soon as you press the video button, the low battery indicator starts to flash and the camera shuts down - even with a fully charged battery. When you turn the camera back on, the battery is fine

"photo quality is very good.color contrasts is fine."
