Canon PowerShot SX40 HS review

Editors' note: Several of the design and features are identical between the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS and the

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS has a flexible lens range, very good image stabilization, excellent photo quality for its class, and shooting modes for every kind of user.

The SX40 HS's shooting performance lags behind that of the competition and has a couple potentially irritating design points.

If you're after a wide and long lens and excellent photo quality, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a standout. In features, design, and performance, though, it's a bit lacking.

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS offers an impressive 35x zoom range, fast continuous shooting, and very good image quality. You won't be able to fit it into your pocket, but this megazoom can capture telephoto images that a smaller camera couldn't dream of.

35x zoom range. Fast recycle rate. Articulating LCD. Eye-level electronic viewfinder.

Bulky. Noisy at ISO 1600 and above. 1080p video capture limited to 24fps.

Performance and Conclusions The SX40 HS doesn’t boast the fastest start-up time in the world, taking about 2.5 seconds to capture the first shot. After that, however, it delivers a very impressive 0.4-second recycle time and 0.5-second shutter lag. It...

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Review

The Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a brand new super-zoom camera sporting a 35x zoom lens which is equivalent to a focal length of 24-840mm. Replacing the previous SX30IS model, the SX40 HS features a 12 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, DIGIC 5...

Since the SX40 HS costs roughly the same as an entry level DSLR plus kit lens you've really got to want the broad paparazzi-style focal range on offer here to even think about parting with your cash. If you've got over that hurdle it does just about...

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS

Canon's SX40 HS may be the pinnacle of their megazoom efforts to date, with excellent image quality and good overall performance. If you're looking for a satisfying long-zoom digital camera experience, look no further.

Wide, long all-purpose zoom lens performs well; Very good image quality; Articulating LCD; Good grip; Excellent controls

Rear scroll wheel is too sensitive; Low-res LCD; No lens hood included; Slow startup time; Slow cycle time

Stepping back from the SX30's 14.1-megapixel sensor improved high ISO performance, and adding the latest DIGIC 5 processor brought chromatic aberration and distortion under control.

PowerShot SX40 HS

($429) is a super zoom camera with one of the most powerful lenses on the market. This 35X zoom lens has an incredible focal range of 24 - 840 mm, which should cover every possible shooting situation that you'll run into

Very good photo quality, with low noise through ISO 800 ; Incredible 35X, 24 - 840 mm zoom lens ; Optical image stabilization; camera will select the proper IS mode for you (in Smart Auto mode) ; Flip-out, rotating 2.7" LCD display offers good outdoor...

Strong highlight clipping at times (use i-Contrast to reduce) ; Not competitive with best super zooms in terms of performance (especially autofocus), LCD/EVF quality, and movie mode ; EVF is small, not very sharp, and a bit washed out ; Videos are a...

Overall, the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is a good super zoom camera, but there are better choices out there. In terms of design and features, it's very competitive. Photo quality is a little better than most of the cameras in this class. Where the SX40...

The Canon SX40 HS is a compact bridge camera with an extreme zoom lens. It offers focal length settings between 24mm and 840mm (35mm film camera equivalent), which allows users to shoot nice wide-angle shots to extreme telephoto images. Adjusting the...

Astonishingly sharp images even though it uses an extreme zoom lens ; Wide-angle shots with 24mm ; Swivel LCD for comfortable shooting ; Easy handling, a lot of scene modes plus standard exposure modes like S, A, and M

The SX40 replaces the SX30 as Canon's top-of-the-line extended zoom camera. The improvements are all under the hood; Canon has replaced the SX30's aging CCD sensor with a new 12.1 megapixel backside-illuminated sensor, bringing the SX40 into the High...

If big optical zooms, top-notch image stabilization and advanced manual controls light your fixed-lens digital camera fire, then the Canon PowerShot SX40 HS ($429.99 MSRP) is the ultimate kindling. It's got an obscene 35x optical zoom 24mm wide-angle...

Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Review: A Formidable Ultrazoom

I loved the promise of the SX40 - a single, integrated, relatively inexpensive camera that can capture every image from wide-angle to telephoto, from landscapes to sports - but quirky auto-focus at the telephoto end and the difficulty of finding...
