Review: Canon PowerShot TX1

The PowerShot TX1 looks like it was assembled by a misanthrope. Its viewfinder juts awkwardly out of the camera's body, twisting to accommodate extreme angles...

Images sport bright colors and sharp details, even in full 10X optical zoom shots. HD video quality matches stand-alone camcorders

Low-light shots look noisy and undefined. Tiny, 1.8-inch LCD. Buttons are hard to reach when shooting vertically

Canon USA Canon Powershot TX1 Camera

Though The Canon PowerShot TX1 resembles a miniature camcorder, it's best suited for still photography. You hold the TX1 vertically instead of horizontally, an odd orientation for a point-and-shoot camera. The design, while compact, comes at the hefty...

10X zoom and optical image stabilization ; Records high-definition video

Small LCD ; Short battery life

If you're already comfortable using a camcorder, the TX1 could be a good choice for taking still photos and short video clips. It's hard to imagine packing a 10X zoom into a smaller package. That small size, unfortunately, leaves you with a small LCD...

Canon PowerShot TX1 Concise Review

Announced back in February just before this year's PMA, the PowerShot TX1 is an unusual offshoot of the hugely popular IXUS / ELPH range that attempts to straddle the divide between digital stills and digital video cameras with its unusual vertical...

Good resolution, good edge-to-edge sharpness at most settings Surprisingly good output quality at lower ISO settings Very compact design and superb build quality Big 10x (39-390mm equivalent) zoom range in a very small camera Much improved on-screen...

Vertical design and control placement have a serious effect on handling Would be nicer if the lens started a little wider than 39mm equivalent Very difficult to hold for vertically-orientated shots Almost impossible to start/stop movies or zoom without...

I have to confess I'm struggling to know who Canon is really aiming the TX1 at; it seems slightly confused as to what its primary function actually is. One the one hand it is, technically, the cheapest 'HDTV' camcorder on the market, and one that is...

Canon PowerShot TX1 review

Every now and again, a company will make a product just to turn some heads; sometimes this is called a statement piece. Usually these products sport unusual designs and fantastical feature sets. With its PowerShot TX1, which includes a 10x optical zoom...

10x optical zoom; optical image stabilization; 1,280x720, 30 frames per second HD video capture; very close-focusing SuperMacro mode.

Extremely awkward design; so-so still image quality; sluggish performance; noisy at higher ISOs.

The TX1's unique design is sure to turn heads, but it's also quite awkward to use, and its still image quality isn't up to Canon's usual standards.

Canon PowerShot TX1 Digital Camera - Full Review

Canon's TX1 is a hybrid digital camera that is surprisingly good at taking stills or video. Its 7.1 megapixel images are crisp, if a little oversaturated, and its HD video capture capability is encouraged by the included component video cable. Video...

Canon PowerShot TX1

As I mentioned, the TX1 is one expensive camera. At $500, the camera is the most expensive ultra zoom camera on the market. Is it worth the price, or will the TX1 join the ranks of the Sony M1/M2 and Pentax MX4 as failed hybrid cameras? Find out now in...

Very good photo quality ; Big zoom in a compact, stylish metal body ; Optical image stabilization ; Flip-out, rotating LCD display is visible in low light ; AF-assist lamp, good low light focusing ; Top-notch movie mode: super high 720p resolution with...

Expensive ; Camera's small size means lousy ergonomics: tiny controls, uncomfortable to hold, requires two hands for best stability ; Inefficient video codec means huge movie file sizes and limited recording times (14 mins at 720p setting) ; Fair...

So what are my final thoughts on the PowerShot TX1? As a serious gadget geek, I think it's pretty cool -- flawed, but fun to show off to friends. As someone who is supposed to help people wisely spend their money on a camera, I have a hard time...

Review: Canon PowerShot TX1

Few camera manufacturers have more digital camera options than Canon, however, the TX1 is possibly their most unique. While the TX1 is technically in the PowerShot family, it looks, feels and performs very differently than its siblings.

Maybe in the next generation Canon can integrate some of the features we already love that seem to have gotten lost in this design such as a larger screen, easier handling and better low-light capabilities. If the camera had all that going for it in...

Canon PowerShot TX1

Despite Canon's ambition to combine the best of two worlds, the PowerShot TX1 has few compelling advantages as a camcorder or a still camera. And its high price and awkward configuration for still photography are serious drawbacks.

Good image stabilization ; Above-average image quality ; Swiveling LCD view screen ; 10x zoom lens

Expensive ; High-quality video format gobbles memory ; Awkward styling

Built with the vertical orientation and movable viewing screen that is common to camcorders, the 7.1-megapixel TX1is Canon’s attempt at creating a device that excels at both video and still shooting. As a video machine, it’s no more or less capable...
