Casio EX-S3

Casio's EXILIM EX-S3 digital camera packs a high resolution 3.2 million effective pixels imager, lens and a 2-inch color LCD monitor into an .46 inch thin body. The EX-S3 is the latest addition to the EXILIM? Series of card-sized digital cameras with...

You couldn't ask for a more "pocketable" digicam, the EX-S3 is as small and thin as they come -- at least as of the time of this review. It's stylish and built like a tank so don't hesitate to take this silver beauty anywhere that you go short of getting

Casio Exilim EX-S3

In this latest generation of Exilims, there's no longer an "M" model that plays MP3s

Ultra-thin, all-metal body ; Robust performance ; Large (though low resolution) LCD ; Many controls, even manual white balance ; Handy dock for photo transfer / battery charging ; Lots of useful "best shot" (scene) modes ; Cool calendar, favorites,...

No optical zoom ; Lots of noise in photos, plus some blurriness and vignetting ; Redeye ; No macro mode ; No tripod mount ; Average movie mode ; 10MB of on-board RAM is not much ; Bundled software not Mac OS X native

The same things that I said about the Sony DSC-U60 apply here. The Exilim EX-S3 is a nice secondary camera that you can take anywhere. If this is your first camera, I'd probably skip it -- the photo quality isn't that great, and you're really find...

I bought this camera years ago, and it's still with me and going strong. Very handy for quick photos, and the quality is still miles above mobile phone cameras with similar amounts of pixels. I recently bought me a decent SD card and rediscovered the...

No zoom, but who cares :) Also no shutter options, or any options you would care of. Picture quality is on the edge of what can still be printed at a normal photo size (it can end up grainy when printed) ; Battery empties itself quickly when left...

Less IS more. Quick: snapshot fast. No lag whatsoever. Why do all the others waste time autofocusing? Less IS more. Image quality, both optical quality and color, rendition is vastly improved over the original S1 model (which I adored, and lost)....

None. I can't recommend this camera highly enough. To repeat: with the camera, LESS IS MORE. No zoom? Yeah, and no AF lag, either. True snapshot cam, the best in the business ; Later on . . . (1) it's easy to lose (yup, gone), (2) Casio has never...

Pros: - Great design. Very sleek. Large LCD is an attention grabber. - Portability. Very light and thin. The actual size is not as small as you'd think. But the lightness of the camera and it's thinness makes this maybe the most portable camera. You...

Very fast camera, within two seconds you can grab it, switch on, take picture, switch off and put it back. And it is very very small and has a large LCD. But..the image quality suffers a lot from this tiny size. The distortion is severe, I took...

Dust or sand under the play/record switch ; Don't leave it in your pocket, it's so small I forgot about it and it got stolen in the lockerroom

Excellent portability & good size screen.

Pay for tiny size so sacrifice a little quality

Great little pocket camera, very fast, easy to carry, perfect for point-and- shoot conditions. Great ooh-ahh effect from friends too!

Dust under the lens. Pretty bad, since I carry mine in my pocket most ; all the time, accumulates dust UNDER the lens, were you can't get to it ; to clean. Resulting images are bright and haloed when the dust exists ; I haven't yet written to Casio...

Product Specifications

The EX-S3 is a new model in Casio's acclaimed EXILIM range of card-sized LCD digital cameras. Its unique design and stylish appearance, combined with advanced technology, has made the EXILIM range a great hit with style conscious consumers and celebrities. The EX-S3 retains many of the original features that have made EXILIM so popular, but packs a resolution of 3.2 million pixels and several significant added features. Crucially, the EX-S3 builds on the popularity of the EX-M2 by allowing users to attach sound to video clips. Despite the added features and increased resolution, the EX-S3 manages to retain it's distinctive EXILIM "credit card size" of 57 mm height, 89.5 mm length and 11.7 mm width, thanks to Casio's stack MCM mounting technique. At approximately 72 g in weight, it is also the lightest 3-megapixel digital camera. The EX-S3 features Casio's own digital interface for clearer display images, with a large 2.0" TFT LCD that can be used both as a viewfinder for composing images, as well as for playback of your images instantly. The ability to integrate short movies with sound is a well-loved feature on the EX-M2 and, as such, has been incorporated into the EX-S3. Users can now record video clips up to 30 seconds long, with accompanying sound. The EX-S3 even features Casio's quick response feature that has become a trademark for all its digital cameras. Casio's unique technology enables the camera to power up and be available to shoot in just 0.9 seconds. Original Casio technology also enables a shutter release time lag of 0.01 second, resulting in almost instantaneous image capture after pressing the shutter release button. A new cradle design allows the 2" LCD to face the user as images are being downloaded. The built-in Photo Stand feature, via one-button access, also enables users to view images saved in the memory on an "automatic slide show". Picture Reversal assumes that there is no need to flip your camera over when you want to share images with another person. Press a button and the camera flips the image for you. The camera will store and display images in date order on a unique calendar system, which lets you see which images you have taken and when, in a month to view format, providing a handy visual record of your activities. Casio's famous BEST-SHOT function has been extended to the EX-S3. With fifteen pre-programmed settings, quality images are almost guaranteed whatever the environment. Casio's "Coupling Shot", for instance, allows two subjects to be placed together in a single image, without the need to enlist the help of a passing local. The "Pre-Shot" scenario allows image guidelines, such as the background scenery, to be composed and captured before a final image is stored in the memory.
