Nikon Coolpix S52

Nikon Coolpix S52c Review

By David Rasnake

Pleasing, true-to-life images ; Wi-Fi as good as ever ; Slim form factor ; AF performance dramatically improved

Still not always easy to hop on free Wi-Fi ; Battery life a challenge ; Lots of little lens niggle ; Some ominous body squeaks and rattles

Admittedly, few of the issues that have dogged our S52c sincethe day it was delivered have been related to faults with the camera itself. But a combination of bad luck and bad karma have made it hard for anyone hereat DCR to really want to spend lots ...

Nikon Coolpix S52c Review

Nikon returns with another familiar looking Wi-Fi enabled Coolpix S camera, the Nikon Coolpix S52c.

Pentax Optio V20

Pentax Optio V20 Review

By Howard Creech

Pentax's Optio compacts have tended to fly under the radar, but if the snappy little Pentax Optio V20 is an indication of a new design philosophy, that could change.

Excellent image quality ; Very good lens ; Relatively quick ; Simple to operate

Expensive ; No image stabilization ; Slow maximum aperture

are usually excellent choices for casual shutterbugs and snapshooters who like to bring their camera along just about everywhere they go

Canon IXUS 90 IS / PowerShot SD790 IS / IXY 95 IS

LCD is large and bright ; Relatively simple and intuitive means to get to the common settings, including some custom button setup capability ; Fast start-up and continuous mode ; Optical image stabilization

Control layout odd, not always well thought-out ; AF fussiness ; Noisy digital zoom ; No optical viewfinder

But beyond this straightforward specs sheet, the SD790 does have some features implemented in highly usable ways and feels well-built

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H50

A 15x zoom, an innovative tilting LCD, excellent performance, and mini-DSLR styling.

Good color and image quality ; Good shutter response ; Many user inputs for image modification ; Monitor usable in outdoor light

Stabilization can sometimes unknowingly involve ISO increases ; Lens zoom button can be inadvertently activated ; Control button hard to activate without also activating adjacent functions

won't be bringing up the rear on ultrazoom lens length once that show gets put to bed?) In any event, while the Sony might not be quite as wide or as long as most of the competition, let's see how it measures up otherwise

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170

Crisp, clean images, even at high ISOs ; Impressive features set ; Sleek design, solid construction ; DSLR-like shooting speed

Red channel clipping still a problem ; White balance inconsistent ; Menus can be dense, slow ; Do you really need Happy Face Retouch

So what makes the W170 worthy of a separate model name? Primarily, a 10.1 megapixel sensor that's slightly larger in addition to be higher-res than the W150's 8.1 megapixel variant. If there may not be a lot of new information to be uncovered in ...

Fujifilm FinePix Z20FD

Has Fuji really upped the ante with their latest budget-minded Z-series release, the Fujifilm FinePix Z20fd?

Attractive price ; Hip style and color options ; White balance performance a plus ; Better-than-average performance at ISO 800 and beyond

Flash still problematic ; AF can be slow, continuous shooting slower ; Severely clipped highlights a persistent issue ; The lens hasn't gotten any better

The Z20fd is the follow-up to the Z10fd and smaller sibling to the Z100fd which I reviewed for Digitalcamerareview.com a few months back. Like these two cameras, the Z20fd has the Z series's trademark slim, flat body, a sliding cover to protect lens, ...

Olympus Stylus 1020

Olympus Stylus 1020 Review

By dietcokefiend

With a 7x zoom, the 10 megapixel Olympus Stylus 1020 packs a long-reach punch not seen in many ultracompacts.

Decent ISO performance through ISO 800 ; Included Micro-SD to xD Picture Card adapter ; Good flash recycle times and high-speed flash mode ; Fantastic lens range for an ultracompact

Sometimes confusing menu systems ; No built-in image processing modes

It combines ease of use with features such as an impressive-for-an-ultracompact 7x zoom lens, 10.1 megapixel image sensor offering sensor shift image stabilization, and a high quality 2.7-inch LCD to give aspiring photographers a helping hand, or your ...

Fujifilm Finepix S8100fd

Drawing heavily on its predecessor, the Fujifilm FinePix S8100fd isn't exactly an "all new" model.

Shooting speed and responsiveness generally excellent ; Consistent auto focus across the lens range ; Reasonably flexible auto white balance ; Huge zoom range ; fast apertures throughout

Slow flash recycle times ; Continuous shooting speed not impressive ; High-contrast shots can look compressed ; Some lens faults to watch out for

Building heavily on Fuji's last entry into this category, the lightly updated S8100fd brings 10 megapixels of long-zoom fun to this party. But with everyone else rushing to throw their latest technology into flagship ultrazooms, can the largely "old ...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H10

Lens quality ; 10x optical zoom ; Relatively fast in action mode ; Override settings not always present on point-and-shoot cameras

No optical finder ; LCD practically unusable outdoors ; Manual mode unnecessary as implemented ; Macro mode focus fussiness ; Menu system

The H10 still has a Carl Zeiss 10x zoom (38-380mm in 35mm terms). These high-quality optics distinguish the H10 from other models in this crowded field of 8-plus megapixel compact cameras
