Canon IXUS 900 Ti / PowerShot SD900 / IXY 1000

When the SD700 IS Digital ELPH was released, it was missing two of the main things the flagship Elph would traditionally have: the highest megapixel count and a physically larger sensor (1/1.8 versus 1/2.5 inch). The real replacement for last year's ...

Stylish titanium body; very solid too ; High resolution with a good lens ; Powerful flash unit ; Large high-resolution LCD with good visibility ; Unlimited, fast continuous shooting at full resolution ; Above average performance ; Impressive movie ...

No manual controls ; No optical image stabilization (the SD800 has it) ; No live histogram; very limited exposure information ; No movie focus or optical zoom, XGA option is choppy

The Canon PowerShot SD900 Digital ELPH features 10 megapixels, 3X zoom, a large (and now high resolution) 2.5 inch LCD, ISO 3200 high sensitivity and a stylish titanium body.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S500

Sony Cyber-Shot S500

By Brad Soo

Somewhere in the middle of this year, Sony quietly brought out their Cyber-shot S500 entry-level camera. This one has 6 effective megapixels, a 3X zoom lens and a 2.4 inch LCD. Despite that, it has more simplistic operation and lacks the high ...

Large LCD with good visibility ; Fairly wide zoom lens ; Easy to use ; Very good image quality; especially noise control

Low LCD resolution ; Unresponsive buttons; plastic tripod mount ; Very limited continuous shooting, below average shot-to-shot ; Few features and functions for the price

The Sony Cyber-shot S500 features a large LCD (though with low resolution) and a fairly wide 3X zoom lens. Those are contradicted off by clunky performance in many areas. The camera has very few features and functions for its price as well which make ...

The Panasonic Lumix FZ7 is the latest addition to their ultra-zoom range, featuring 6 megapixels, 12X optical zoom, a larger (versus the FZ5) 2.5 inch LCD and of course, optical image stabilization.

Fast 12x zoom lens with optical image stabilization ; Large LCD with good visibility ; Powerful flash ; Full manual controls with an array of accessories ; Unlimited, fast continuous shooting ; Fast performance ; Good movie mode ; Fairly good image ...

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-N1

Sony Cyber-Shot N1

By Brad Soo

The Sony N1 is an 8 megapixel ultra-compact camera with a huge 3 inch touch screen. You could say that this camera is a souped up W100. So how does this camera perform? Find out now.

High resolution sensor with ISO 800 ; Good battery life ; Large 3 inch LCD (It's a touch screen too!) ; Limited but nevertheless useful manual mode ; Fairly powerful flash range ; Unlimited VGA 30 FPS movie mode ; Fancy playback and slideshow features ...

Slow and limited continuous shooting ; No white balance or manual focus controls ; Overall performance could be faster and better

The Sony N1 is a fantastic camera. It has two things which may fool you but the result is always otherwise and great: 1. The 8 megapixel imager produces surprisingly good images (at ISO 800 too!) and 2. the great 3 inch touch screen is sharp and ...

Canon PowerShot A530

Canon PowerShot A530

By Brad Soo

The Canon PowerShot A530 has 5 megapixels, a 1.8 inch LCD and a 4X zoom lens it shares with the cameras above. This camera may be distinguished from the higher-end A540 in several ways, but is image quality one of those points? Let's find out more ...

Nice 4x zoom lens ; Good (not excellent) battery life ; Full manual mode ; Unlimited, fast continuous shooting ; Fast performance ; Produces good photos, low noise till ISO 400; ISO 800 useable for small prints ; Affordable

Small LCD with low resolution ; No priority modes; incompatible with conversion lenses ; Overall performance could be faster and better; especially autofocus ; Mediocre movie mode

I'll make this short and simple, the A530 is a watered down A540 which sells at a lower price. Things like battery life and image quality are still good and the full manual mode is a plus. Performance was snappy too.

Olympus mju 700/ Stylus 710

Olympus Stylus 710

By Brad Soo

Olympus' answer to increasingly small cameras is to make their line of compact cameras even more compact. And here it is. The Stylus 710 has 7 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD, 3x optical zoom and a weatherproof body. However, it has no manual controls and ...

7 megapixels in an all-weather body ; Large LCD with good visibility ; Fast performance - until the buffer fills ; A great big collection of scene modes ; Camera guide and help

No manual controls ; Slow lens (Aperture range one of the worst I've ever seen) ; Low resolution LCD ; Sub-standard low-light focusing ; Slow (for "normal" mode) and limited continuous shooting ; No real optical image stabilization ; Not-even-close 8 ...

The Stylus 710 has 7 megapixels in a stylish and somewhat sturdy all-weather body which resists scratches. Though it has nice things like a large LCD with good visibility, there always seems to be a downside to every positive thing on the Stylus 710. ...

By Brad Soo

The Canon PowerShot A530 and A540 twins are updates to 2005's A510 and A520. This time, they're each equipped with the latest DIGIC II processor. The Canon PowerShot A540 features 6 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD, full manual controls, a ...

Nice 4x zoom lens ; Good (not excellent) battery life ; Large LCD with good visibility ; Full manual controls with many accessories ; Unlimited, fast continuous shooting ; Fast performance ; VGA 30 FPS movie mode ; Produces good photos, acceptable ...

Low LCD resolution ; Faster shutter speeds restricted to small apertures ; Overall performance could be faster and better; especially autofocus ; Movies limited to 1 GB; around 8 or 9 minutes at the highest settings ; Redeye and ISO 800 needs some ...

The very affordable Canon PowerShot A540 offers 6 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD and a 4X zoom lens. The A540 offers full manual controls too, in addition to auto and scene modes - making it a good choice for most people.

Nikon Coolpix P4

Nikon Coolpix P4

By Brad Soo

When Nikon's first two P-series cameras were launched, they were good but not very stylish. The new Nikon P3 and P4 do away with the P1 and P2's "bulky" look and feature a silky metal casing. The P3 is higher-end than the P4 surprisingly and the ...

3.5x zoom lens with optical image stabilization ; 2.5 inch LCD with average resolution and visibility ; Good build quality ; Aperture control and some other changeable settings ; User-friendly; many scene modes and built-in help ; Interval shooting ...

Below average battery life ; Not for low-light; average flash, poor AF in the dark, no ISO 800 ; Slow performance in almost all aspects, small buffer ; No control over shutter speed, no live histogram either ; Plastic compartment door and tripod mount ...

The Nikon Coolpix P4 has some 8 megapixels in a CCD behind its 3.5X optically image stabilized lens as well as a 2.5 inch LCD on its back.

Sharing the features of the Coolpix P4; 8 megapixels, a 3.5X stabilized zoom lens, a 2.5 inch LCD and aperture control, the Nikon Coolpix P3 also adds built-in WiFi. I didn't recommend the P4 because of a few reasons but the Coolpix P3 is around the ...

Canon PowerShot A430

Canon PowerShot A430

By Brad Soo

Another entry-level camera of interest is the Canon PowerShot A430 which has 4 megapixels, 4x optical zoom, a 1.8 inch LCD and simple operation. Ready for more about this entry-level camera which has more zoom power than anyone else? Very well, let's ...

4x zoom lens; more telephoto power ; Good battery life ; Good LCD visibility ; Unlimited, fast continuous shooting ; Fast performance ; Great 1 cm macro mode with optional digital zoom ; Very good image quality with low noise until ISO 200; extremely ...

Small, low resolution LCD ; Weaker flash; red-eye ; Autofocus could be faster; AF is lagging behind competition ; Lame" movie mode in 2006; VGA at a choppy 10 FPS, limited to 1 GB

The affordable Canon PowerShot A430 is the successor to last year's A410. Featuring 4 megapixels, a bigger 4x zoom lens, 1.8 inch LCD and great performance, this camera is a competitive one.
