Good image quality and sharpness. Good zoom range for a compact camera.

Slow performance. Shutter lag.

The HP Photosmart R817 is a very good compact camera for beginners, and we really like the 5X optical zoom. Performance could be better, though.

HP Photosmart R817 Camera

With its small size and stainless steel shell, HP's Photosmart R817 bears a strong family resemblance to its sibling, the Photosmart R717, a Best Buy recipient. The $349, 5.1-megapixel R817 costs more and has fewer megapixels than the $300,...

In-camera red-eye reduction 5X zoom

Below-average image quality Low battery life

The camera runs on a lithium-ion battery that lasted for only 175 shots between charges in our tests. The only way to charge it is by first attaching the camera to the docking cradle. The cradle has a USB port for printing and uploading your photos,...

HP PhotoSmart R817 Digital Camera (5.2MP, 2616x1960, 5x Opt, 32MB Internal Memory, SD/MMC Slot)

In-camera red-eye reduction ; 5X zoom

Below-average image quality ; Low battery life

Offers in-camera red-eye reduction like the similar R717, plus a more powerful zoom, but image quality was less impressive.

HP PhotoSmart R817

The HP PhotoSmart R817, like its 6.2-megapixel sibling Photosmart R717, features HP Real Life technologies with HP Instant Share, a technology that makes sharing, printing, and saving digital photos easy. In addition, the PhotoSmart R817 offers 5.1-megapi

Bottom line - we feel the HP PhotoSmart R817 is a worthy competitor in the 5-megapixel category, offering great image, speedy performance, "cool" Real Life Technologies as well as various useful exposure modes. It will make a great choice for anyone who w

HP Photosmart R817 Review

The HP Photosmart R817 is HP's latest digital camera and it attempts to emulate the success of the well-received R707 and R717 models. Despite the higher model number, the HP R817 actually has less megapixels (5 rather than 6) and a smaller image...

The HP Photosmart R817 seems to have everything going for it. Small, compact and very stylish body, lots of innovative features like Adaptive Lighting that really make a difference, full manual controls and a 5x optical zoom lens that sets it apart...

If you're ready to learn about the R817, I'm ready to tell you. Our review starts now

Good photo quality (though see issues below) ; Compact body with 5X zoom lens ; Very good performance in most areas ; Full manual controls ; Adaptive Lighting feature brightens up dark areas of your photos ; Tons of useful features: in-camera redeye...

Images may be a bit too sharp, though it's easy to remedy ; Majorly noise night shots ; A bit of shutter lag ; Manual focus feature could be better ; Battery charging and photo transfer to a PC requires dock ; Video out and slide show functions require...

As long as you're not taking multi-second exposures the R817 is a camera that gets my recommendation. It has a ton of genuinely useful features, with very few gimmicks. If you want a compact camera with more zoom than other cameras, check out the...

HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera Review

The HP Photosmart R817 will satisfy families looking for an easy-to-use point and shoot digital camera.

Great ergonomics and user interface ; Easy to use ; Excellent integration of the camera with computers, printers, online services, and television with the right accessories ; 5x optical lens gets you up close

Image noise is still moderately high ; QVGA movie mode is weak

The R817 is the successor the R717. While the R817 has one fewer megapixels, the addition of the 5x optical Pentax lens and refined user interface make up for it. While the Pentax lens may take slightly sharper photos, noise continues to be an issue...

HP Photosmart R817

I love this little camera, I take it scuba diving with me all the time and it turns out good enough pictures for a non-pro. I have found that when I need to flash a quick picture of a shark before it swims away, this camera never wants me to, it always...

Great pictures for everyday purposes, User interface is easy to learn, lots of different mode options to satisy any style, and it has accessories that you can buy that allow you to take it scuba divin

When you need it the most and the fastest this camera takes it's sweet time to charge the flash before taking the picture, also pictures are almost impossible to take when the flash is turned off

HP Photosmart R817

Bought this camera in Jan 2007. In August the camera would not take a flash picture. Would say "charging flash". Spent over an hour on the phone with India to get a "refurbished" R817. This is the 2nd and last HP camera I will ever buy. Bought a R707...

Product Specifications

The HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera features a powerful Pentax 5x optical lens, 5.1 megapixel (MP) resolution and new intuitive HP Real Life technologies. This camera makes it easy for all photographers to capture unique detail in every picture. With the HP sculpted wave style finger grip and sleek stainless steel finish this camera is contoured to sit perfectly in the consumer's hand. This camera's advanced features include multi-zone auto focus for crisp accurate shots. Users are able to select shutter or aperture priority, or choose to take greater control by working within the 'full manual mode' in light sensitive situations, in order to capture more creative photographs. The camera has an impressive 40x total zoom (5x digital, 8x optical) and the large 5.1 cm LCD screen, which makes it simple to quickly view images, indoors and out, allowing users to check their shots as soon as they are taken. A choice of 15 unique shooting modes including action, landscape, beach and theater mode, gives users a definitive solution for any scenario. The new 'theater mode', for example, makes it easier to capture correctly exposed true-to-life photographs of concerts and performances at the touch of a button. Photographers can use this feature together with the extended zoom to get up close and personal, no matter where they are sitting. In addition, this camera benefits from a host of new and exclusive HP Real Life technologies. These landmark features include the new HP In-camera Panorama stitching, which allows users to 'stitch' together multi-shot photos of landscapes and sequences in the camera. The camera can seamlessly stitch up to 5 photos together, without the use of a PC, to create a single photo for easy printing. Panorama photos can then be previewed on the camera's large LCD screen, allowing users to confirm that they've captured their desired shot. This model is also equipped with a 'video mode', making it possible to capture the sights and sounds of every moment with picture perfect quality. Often, when reviewing video, photographers have a desire to extract specific frames or stills from the moving images. The HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera makes it possible for users to print 'stills' directly from video footage, without the need for a PC. Users can extract, print and share any of the moving pictures as single frame photographs.
