Konica Minolta Dimage A1 SLR Digital Camera Camera

The $900 DiMage A1 resembles an SLR-camera--it has a big, boxy shape and a large barrel lens. But it has some characteristics that really distinguish it from other advanced cameras. Like a camcorder, the DiMage A1's eye-level viewfinder can be flipped...

As for image quality, the DiMage A1 was a little disappointing, despite its 5-megapixel CCD. Its exposure accuracy was good, but color accuracy and sharpness were below average compared with other advanced cameras. In our outdoor shot, for instance, we...

Minolta DiMAGE A1

The DiMAGE A1 is the successor to the 'DiMAGE 7' seriesof digital cameras. Minolta has chosen not to use the '7' name on thiscamera because they believe it to be such a leap forward in functionalityand features. The A1 utilizes the same size CCD and 7x...

Delivers pleasing 'film like' images with average resolution ; Unique Anti-Shake feature which moves the CCD to compensate ; Flexible selectable colour space (sRGB, sRGB Vivid, Adobe RGB) ; Optionally embedded ICC profile for Adobe RGB ; Improved...

Lower resolution that we would expect for the money ; Noise increases at slower shutter speeds and especially long exposures ; Moiré visible near resolution limits ; Image processing artifacts in JPEG images (dots, moiré, etc.) not in RAW converted ;...

There's little doubt that the DiMAGE A1 is the most feature rich and flexible prosumer digital camera currently available. Indeed it has a range of flexibility beyond that of most digital SLR's. It's a camera designed as a photographers tool, and one...

Minolta DiMAGE A1 Digital Camera Review: Intro and Highlights

The Minolta DiMAGE A1 is the latest in a family of DiMAGE electronic SLR models that stretches back to the original DiMAGE 7, the first five-megapixel prosumer camera, introduced over two years ago (early 2001). As you'll read below, the new DiMAGE A1...

Shutter lag and cycle time: Very fast shutter response, great cycle time. I refrained from reporting on shutter lag and cycle times when I first looked at a prototype A1, and it was well that I did: Compared to the somewhat sluggish response of that...

Minolta DiMAGE A1 A 5 Mp 7x Zoom SLR That Anticipates Moving Moments

I put the DiMAGE A1 in standard burst mode, and followed the movements of these monkeys, at 7x zoom plus 2x digital. Cropped, with contrast adjustment

Despite its advanced micro-technology, the A1 had considerable difficulty focusing and responding quickly enough under these very low-light levels in a rainforest exhibit. I was surprised to get this picture, captured using an external flash

You can get quite close with the DiMAGE A1, as seen in this image of dolls at a flea market in Warrensburg, New York.

Did I mention that the A1 also has a 5 Megapixel sensor, 7X optical zoom lens, full manual controls, and a hot shoe? Sounds impressive to me. How does it perform? Find out now

Very good photo quality ; 7X optical zoom lens ; Image stabilization system ; Full manual controls (and plenty of them) ; Hot shoe + flash sync port ; Very good AF performance, even without AF-assist lamp ; LCD/EVF are useful in low lighting conditions...

Complex; not easy to just pick up and use without reading the manual first ; Images slightly noisy ; Tiny 16MB card included with camera ; Flimsy plastic door over CF slot ; Below average macro mode ; Pricey

If you're looking for a serious digital camera with all the trimmings, you'll want to take a close look at the DiMAGE A1.

Minolta DiMAGE A1

I've used this camera for 6 years, primarily for photographing kayakers and rowers racing on lakes and the ocean while pedaling a high speed pedal boat alongside. This camera has proven itself to be an excellent tool for the job, with its manual zoom...

Problems encountered with this camera are ; 1. Sensor recall issue ; 2. Refuses to focus on certain colors, such as orange boats, no matter how many times you try or from which angle you try ; 3. In the last year it began to have troubles with exposure...

Product Specifications

Put simply, 3D AF is a revolution in digital photography. Because now you can capture sharp, high-quality images of a moving subject, even if it's coming right at you. The DiMAGE A1 features Konica Minolta's innovative subject tracking algorithm, which continues focusing on your subject as it moves along the X, Y, and Z-axes of the picture frame. Then, when you fully press the shutter release button, predictive focus control takes over. It compensates for the time lag between shutter release and image capture to further ensure accuracy. This entire autofocusing process is extremely fast, thanks to a specialized ASIC chip. The DiMAGE A1 offers not only a wide shooting range, but outstanding color as well. One key to this is Konica Minolta's new image processing LSI. As shooting conditions change, the incoming CCD signal is precisely calibrated for white balance, contrast, color reproduction, and other factors. The LSI delivers excellent results with noise reduction, especially in the flat areas of an image, and leads to shots that appear strikingly natural. In addition to improved color processing, the new LSI also has the advantages of lower power consumption and faster processing - the DiMAGE A1 records JPEG images on a CompactFlash card at 1.5x the speed of the DiMAGE 7i/7Hi. Konica Minolta's Anti-Shake system gives you a highly effective way to deal with camera shake - a major cause of substandard images, especially with telephoto shots and in dim lighting. The DiMAGE A1 is the world's first digital still camera featuring a CCD-shift mechanism to stabilize images. To turn on Anti-Shake you simply press a button, which then lights up to let you know that the function is on. Activation is immediate, thanks to a specialized integrated circuit. Anti-Shake is driven by an exclusive algorithm that offers stability over a wider range than conventional systems (up to 3 shutter speeds slower than the standard estimate for a scene, depending on shooting conditions). The CCD-shift mechanism helps keep the camera compact. White balance not only helps you obtain accurate coloration under different types of lighting, but it also lets you experiment with the overall tone of your images. Auto control is supplemented by 6 preset options, which can be selected right away, and 3 customizable settings. For even greater control over white balance, you can use the rear control dial to adjust 5 of the presets within a +/-3 level range. For the sixth preset, Fluorescent, you are given several types of fluorescent light to choose from. The DiMAGE A1 offers movie recording with a variety of scenes and lighting conditions. For example, if your subject is at a distance, you can use 7x optical zoom to capture the action. And, to ensure that the picture stays steady during recording, Anti-Shake technology is available at all focal lengths. Movie clips are captured at 320 x 240 resolution, with audio, and may be up to 15 minutes long. Capture rate is 24 fps.
