Nikon Coolpix 700

The Nikon Coolpix 700 is the fixed lens, smaller brother to the Nikon Coolpix 950. The 700 sports many similarities with the 950 including the image sensor, similar internal software, many similar features and the same fast processing and cycle times.

Excellent image quality (class leading) ; High resolution (1600 x 1200) ; Good colour balance, good white balance ; Little need for post-processing ; Good construction, even though it's a plastic case ; Good intellegent matrix metering ; Very fast...

Slight barrel distortion ; Sometimes poor low light focusing / slow focusing ; Badly positioned tripod mount ; Serial port (no USB!)

As with the 950 I'll give the 700 ratings out of 10 (remember these are based on it's design and ability to do the job it's designed to do.

Excellent reproduction for cost. Excellent resolution and more than satisfactory resolution. Easily makes excellent print reproductions that are a better quality than 35mm. Camera easy to use as it operates in both manual or automatic modes. Uses 4...

Manual/auto modes, macro, 2X zoom, very easy to handle as it's light and fits hand well.

Some problems getting used to manual mode features.

Making the best of it

I bought this camera when I was passing through Dubai and I thought I was getting a great deal. I hadn't done any shopping though I'd heard from my cousin that the Coolpix series was good. So for $520, I bought the camera and started taking photos.

coolpix 700, great deal

I've had the Coolpix 700 for about 3 months now. Overall, I'm very happy with it. Most importantly, it is a great deal to get a 2-million pixel CCD that allows photographs of up to 1600x1200 pixels for the price.

Great deal for a 2.1 megapixel camera

shutter button has poor feel.

Product Specifications

Coolpix 700 is a compact and sturdy camera, shaped for a comfortable and secure grip. It will easily fit in a pocket or purse, or clip onto a belt with its included carrying case. Combine this with speed, advanced features, ease of use, and demonstrated high quality output. The result? An ideal "only" digital camera for casual home or everyday business use, and an ideal "second" camera for the more intense photographer. For the casual home or business user, Coolpix 700 takes minimal training and experience to use. This means that family, friends, or employees can effectively use the camera with just a few simple instructions. And with its highest resolution output (1600x1200 pixels) in the "fine" quality mode, it will produce smooth, detailed, high quality prints up to 8" x 10" (20cm x 25cm). For the more intense user, Coolpix 700 is not a toy - it makes a great second camera, because its small size and ease of use give it an important role in day-to-day photography. The automatically programmed shutter speeds and aperture settings are visible in the LCD screen, if you so choose. Like the LCD view itself, the shutter and aperture readouts are live and in real time. With this information, the experienced photographer will be able to determine the suitability of the shutter speed and aperture for the situation at hand. And with a little practice, it's quite simple to quickly change the ISO setting from the default 80, up to 100, 160, or 320 - with the resulting changes in shutter speeds and aperture combinations.
