Nikon Coolpix 8700

Excellent, highly detailed images; impressive 8X ED-Nikkor zoom lens; sturdy magnesium-alloy body; RAW-file capture.

Easy to accidentally activate some controls; long RAW shot-to-shot time; slow low-light AF; no live histogram in manual mode; 30-second limit on video clips; full RAW-file editing software costs $99 extra.

It shoots good photos, but mediocre performance and a serious design flaw may keep this 8-megapixel camera out of the hands of enthusiasts.

Nikon Coolpix 8700 Digital Camera Camera

Nikon's 8-megapixel 8700 is a straightforward upgrade of the 5-megapixel Coolpix 5700. The two cameras have nearly identical bodies and many of the same controls; both have 8X optical zooms with electronic eye-level viewfinders, and articulated LCD...

All of the accessory lenses designed for the Coolpix 5700 also work on the 8700; they include a 1.5X telephoto converter and a .8X wide-angle converter for about $150 each, and a massive fish-eye lens

Useful time-lapse and bulb modes ; LCD and EVF viewable in low light ; LCD can flip out and rotate ; Autofocus assist-lamp ; Very good photo quality

Lens starts at 35mm ; Complex controls and menu ; No memory card included ; Less powerful battery ; Lengthy shot-to-shot speed in RAW or TIFF mode

Nikon Coolpix 8700

The eight megapixel, eight times optical zoom Coolpix 8700 was announced on January 28th, 2004, a year and eight months since the five megapixel Coolpix 5700 on which it is based. The 8700 enters the eight megapixel fray which is currently made up of...

Eight times optical zoom, nearly 300 mm telephoto reach ; Excellent automatic white balance, best of group ; Excellent macro performance, best of group ; Good image quality, resolution not as high as expected ; Smallest and lightest eight megapixel...

Slower than expected startup time ; Limited latitude of image parameter adjustment ; AF assist lamp requires flash to be up ; Initially confusing 'User setting' concept ; Lower than advertised continuous shooting speed ; Battery life limited by low...

At first the Coolpix 8700 looks like a simple upgradefor Nikon, take the Coolpix 5700 body, the same lens and controls anddrop in an eight megapixel CCD. However it's clear that the 8700 has changedquite a bit under the skin, the camera starts more...

Digital Cameras - Nikon Coolpix 5700 Digital Camera Review

As I say before each of my Nikon reviews, Nikon is one of the names that literally needs no introduction in the world of photography. Long a leader in the film world, they now offer cameras for both the serious amateur and working professional, in both...

Nikon Coolpix 8700

The 8 Megapixel cameras I've tested thus far haven't exceeded my expectations. Will the 8700 do better? Find out in our review

Very good photo quality ; Amazing expandability in terms of lenses, flashes ; AF-assist lamp ; EVF somewhat usable in low light ; Compact body for an 8X zoom lens ; VGA movie mode (though short time limit) ; Tons of manual controls ; Beautiful rotating...

Noisy images ; Camera locks up for a second or two while it finishes writing to memory card ; Clunky, sluggish interface ; Does not fully support Nikon Speedlites ; Flimsy plastic door over CF slot ; Manual focus ring would've been nice ; Battery not...

All things considered, I recommend the 8700. Each 8MP camera that I've tested thus far has its own strengths and weaknesses, so they're hard to compare directly. I would take a close look at the 8700 and the competition to see which one you like best....

As if you haven't read, I'm not a fan of these sorts of cameras since today you can get far better quality for the same price in a slightly bigger true SLR like the Nikon D70 or Canon Digital Rebel. I have a whole page here about that.

Designed for the serious photographer who wants extensive controls in a compact package, the 8-megapixel Nikon Coolpix 8700 delivers. Weighing only 17 ounces, it's amazing how much camera Nikon fits into such a small package. The design of the generous...

The camera boots up in about two seconds and, although not as fast as an SLR, its shutter lag has noticeably improved over earlier models. By pre-focusing on my subject, I captured fleeting facial expressions without the frustration I've experienced...
