Nikon CoolPix P1

The 8-megapixel Coolpix P1 and 5-megapixel P2 are the world's first builtin Wi-Fi-enabled (802.11b/g-compatible) digital cameras and allow consumers to immediately transmit images wirelessly directly to a computer or to any PictBridge-enabled printer equi

Bottom line - Nikon's Coolpix P1 is a nice ultra-compact digicam that produces good quality 8-megapixel images and VGA sized movies; and lets not forget its 802.11 b/g certified. I liked just about every feature on this model, and was only annoyed when tr

Nikon Coolpix P1 WiFi cam previewed

Lets Go Digital has a preview of the Nikon Coolpix P1 and they seem to dig the cam, though mainly for its wireless capabilities. They do mention that it might take people a while to warm up to using a WiFi camera, and we would love to use the WiFi for...

Nikon Coolpix P1 Digital Camera Review

The Nikon Coolpix P1 looks like all of its other compact Coolpix cousins with its 3.6 x 2.4 x 1.5-inch body, but it comes with a little something extra-wireless technology. The P1 and its sibling, the P2, were announced in September 2005 and hit the...

- Wireless shoot & transfer - Impressively low noise in images (particularly at low ISOs) - Ergonomic handling - Wide f/2.7 aperture with manual adjustment - Intuitive interface - Expansive list of scene modes for snapshooters

- Loss of detail in images due to noise reduction - Limited flash range - Low resolution LCD solarizes easily - Wireless setup is complicated - Only connects to profiled computers and printers - No zoom in movie mode

Nikon started with a basic set of features - 8 megapixels, 3.5x optical zoom lens, 2.5-inch LCD screen - and crammed them in a compact body with a built-in wireless port. The consumer wireless market is quite new and the P1 is one of the first three...

Nikon Coolpix P1

Wi-Fi transfer and printing; very good image quality; many customizable image parameters.

Sluggish performance; limited manual-exposure control; can't e-mail images or post them to the Web via Wi-Fi.

The Nikon Coolpix P1's good image quality offsets its novel but limited Wi-Fi capabilities.

Solid picture quality. Good performance and features.

Connecting to wireless signal can be frustrating. Manuals and help guides need improvement.

The Nikon Coolpix P1 may have been the first wireless point-and-shoot to reach the market, but its wireless capabilities lag behind.

Wireless Nikon P1 Fails to Connect

Efforts to link wirelessly between the Coolpix P1 and a notebook can be annoyingly fruitless.

Digital Cameras - Nikon Coolpix P1 Digital Camera Review, Information, Specifications

Will WiFi-connected cameras be the next big wave in the digital camera market? Perhaps... and perhaps not. Regardless of whether they'll ever achieve dominance though, it's clear that we're going to see more of them cropping up over the next year or...

Beautiful design, well-built

No optical viewfinder, Somewhat short battery life, especially when WiFi is in use, WiFi could still be made simpler to configure, still too easy to end up in a blind alley, WiFi mode reduces the camera to an almost pure point & shoot -- We would have...

Nikon Coolpix P1

The Nikon Coolpix P1, along with the 5 megapixel Coolpix P2, are Nikon's first WiFi digital cameras. Besides being WiFi enabled, the Nikon Coolpix P1 also features an 8 megapixel sensor, 3.5x optical zoom, a 2.5 inch LCD and aperture control.

WiFi enabled (Only 3 other cameras have this) ; Affordable ; Large 2.5 inch LCD ; Slightly longer than average 3.5x zoom lens ; Many scene modes and some controls ; Aperture control with bracketing feature ; Shutter speed/aperture combinations ; VGA 30...

Average battery life; High power consumption with WiFi on and extra battery pack is expensive ; Weak flash ; LCD lacks resolution and visibility in low-light ; No full manual mode and control over shutter speed ; Buffer clearing not fast ; Some soft...

The Nikon Coolpix P1 has most of the stuff that makes a WiFi digital camera great: 8 megapixels, a 2.5 inch LCD, a slightly longer than average 3.5x optical zoom lens, lots of scene modes and aperture control.

Product Specifications

Offering built-in Wireless LAN support (IEEE802.11b/g), the COOLPIX P1 presents new potential in the field of compact digital photography and offers unprecedented photographic freedom. Supporting wireless transfer, the COOLPIX P1 is able to transfer pictures from the memory card to a computer at the user's command. Enabling wireless shooting, the camera can transfer each individual picture to a computer literally as soon as it is shot. The COOLPIX P1 also offers wireless printing (requires optional Wireless Printer Adapter), which combines the advantages of wireless transfer and PictBridge direct-printing technology to achieve simple printing of pictures without the inconvenience of cables. Providing users with much closer control over the appearance of the final image, the COOLPIX P1 offers a selection of Advanced Scene Modes in addition to the ample range of conventional Scene Modes. Giving a choice of three different effects (Normal, Effect 1, Effect 2), these Advanced Scene Modes can produce results that match personal preferences more closely. The COOLPIX P1 also comes with the advantage of Aperture-priority Auto Mode. Offering 10-step manual control in 1/3EV increments, it lets the user decide depth of field while the camera automatically ensures optimal exposure. The COOLPIX P1 even features a range of functions that give users the ability to refine images in-camera. Nikon's unique D-Lighting Function is available in Playback Mode for the correction of images with insufficient flash or excessive backlight. Just select the image you want to improve and D-Lighting creates a copy with automatically added detail and light wherever necessary. Portrait (Face AF) has the unique ability to detect human faces in the shot, providing sharp, appropriate focus, when the subject is facing the camera from a typical portrait distance. There's also In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, which corrects for the unfortunate red-eye effect that can be caused by flash to make for more pleasing portraits in low light. In addition to offering such an impressive array of capabilities that go beyond the norm, the COOLPIX P1 delivers excellent imaging quality. Equipped with a 1-inch CCD featuring 8.0 effective megapixels, the camera offer outstanding resolution that can stand up to significant enlargement. What's more the COOLPIX P1 is also equipped with a powerful, high-quality 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor lens, which delivers 36-126mm (35mm equivalent) performance for broad compositional freedom.
