Nikon Coolpix P300 (Black) review: Nikon Coolpix P300 (Black)

Nikon Coolpix P300 (Black)

The ; has a nice lens, shooting modes for every kind of user, a solid design, and it's easy to use.

The P300's photos look overprocessed when viewed at full size, and performance feels a bit slow.

Snapshooters wanting a little more creative control than the average point-and-shoot offers should check out the Nikon Coolpix P300.

Nikon Coolpix P300 Review: Big Bang for the Buck

With just a few trade-offs, the Nikon Coolpix P300 ($330 as of July 31, 2011) is as close as a rival gets to the Canon PowerShot S95 in the realm of compact cameras with manual controls. Both cameras distinguish themselves from the pack by targeting...

Excellent low-light photos ; Manual aperture and shutter controls ; Bright F1.8 lens ; Great features for the price

No manual focus ; No RAW shooting mode

The Nikon Coolpix P300 offers great hardware and performance for its price, with an F1.8 lens, manual controls, and a very easy-to-use interface.

Nikon P300 Review

After years of relative stagnation, Nikon's P-series is back. The Coolpix P7000, released late last year, now has a little brother - the P300. Both in terms of specification and styling, the P7000 was designed to rival Canon's Powershot G-series, but...

Fast lens on the wide end of the zoom (f/1.8) Very wide 24mm equiv. is great for landscape and indoor shots AF illuminator effective in low light Relatively simple operational ergonomics provide high level of manual control USB charging is convenient...

No 'quick' menu for commonly-accessed shooting settings No control over noise reduction/sharpening At 100%, even low ISO images look 'crunchy' due to noise reduction and sharpening No direct access to ISO or White Balance (you have to go through the...

The market for high-end compact cameras with a small form factor is booming at the moment, which is evidenced in the rash of new releases in 2010-2011. We're certain that, purely because of its styling, a lot of consumers will regard the P300 as a...

Nikon Coolpix P300 Preview

Nikon has officially joined the compact low-light powerhouse category, with their all new Coolpix P300. In direct competition with models like Canon's PowerShot S95 (or S90), Olympus' XZ-1, Panasonic's Lumix DMC-LX5, and Samsung's EX1/TL500, the P300...

Nikon Coolpix P300 Review

The Nikon Coolpix P300 is a new pocket compact camera designed to appeal to the keen enthusiast photographer. The P300's most obvious competitors are the Canon PowerShot S95, Panasonic LX5 and the Olympus XZ-1, but unlike all of those models the P300...

On paper the Nikon Coolpix P300 beats its main rivals in most key areas - more megapixels, bigger LCD screen, faster continuous shooting, higher quality video - but the lack of RAW mode, physically smaller sensor and some questionable design decisions...

Nikon COOLPIX P300

The Nikon COOLPIX P300 is a compact point-and-shoot that fits nicely in any pocket—but it’s not so small that it’s hard to use. It has a nice solid feel, and all the dials are intuitive and easy to operate.

Fast lens; color; sharpness; battery life

Noise at ISO 400

There’s an Easy Panorama setting for taking panoramas in one easy motion, and a Panorama Assist function that gives you a ghosted image on the LCD for lining up the next shot. Both functions work well, but the Easy setting results in a much smaller...

Nikon Coolpix P300 Review

Looking at the specifications for the P300 it becomes fairly obvious why the camera earned a "P" (for performance) designation from Nikon. The inclusion of the backside illuminated sensor is a promising technology in the field of noise reduction;...

Good still image quality, 1080 HD video, Better-than-average ISO noise performance versus conventional sensor, Manual controls, Fast lens at wide-angle

Coolpix P300 Review

Is the P Justified? What is it? The Nikon P300 appears to be Nikon's response to the Canon S95 and Panasonic LX-5. Small like the Canon, fast lens like the Panasonic. With a 12mp 1/2.3" BSI CMOS sensor and a 24-100mm (equivalent) f/1.8-4.9 zoom...

Review: Nikon CoolPix P300 digital camera

My first ever camera of any sort was a Nikon CoolPix 800 digicam which I brought along on my honeymoon (this was in the year 2000, by the way) and it's the camera I credit with getting me hooked on photography.

wide and fast (f/1.8!) lens ; full HD 1080p video with stereo sound, plus the ability to zoom while recording ; crisp and sharp LCD display ; dedicated Movie button makes it so easy to jump between photo and video coverage ; useful creative modes and...

actual sensor size lets down the capabilities of the P300′s lens ; battery life passable but not great ; control scheme a little fiddly, not as intuitive as some of the competition ; very strong competition in this price range

These niggles aside, the Nikon is still a very capable camera and any potential buyers will have no cause for regret. It can produce photos far beyond the wildest dreams of my Coolpix 800 from 10 years ago, and some really good video. But the P300’s...
