Nikon Coolpix P7800

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is an enthusiast compact with a great control layout and 7.1x lens, but it's not the right camera for everyone.

Sharp lens. Vari-angle LCD. 7.1x zoom range. Hot shoe and EVF. Lots of physical controls. Microphone input. Raw shooting support. Slow-motion video.

Disappointing EVF. Images on the noisy side. Lacks touch screen and Wi-Fi. Limited burst shooting. Slower to focus in low light and in macro mode. Bulky.

There's no Wi-Fi or GPS built in to the P7800, but either can be added. There's an accessory port on the left side of the camera that supports the GP-1A GPS Unit ($312), and the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter slides into the proprietary USB port that's...

Nikon Coolpix P7800 gains back its viewfinder

The company had dropped the optical viewfinder for the P7700. It resurfaces in the P7800, but now it's electronic.

Nikon Coolpix P7800 Preview

Nikon has announced the new Coolpix P7800. Replacing last year's P7700, which had "outstanding image quality" and "performed especially well in low light," the P7800 carries over many of the P7700's strongest features. Namely, the 12.2 MP 1/1.7" CMOS...

Nikon Coolpix P7800 Review

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is the new premium model in Nikon's extensive range of Coolpix compact digital cameras. The Coolpix P7800 is the successor to the one-year-old P7700, the main addition being a 921K-dot electronic viewfinder with 100% scene...

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a very minor update of the previous P7700 model, principally adding a useful electronic viewfinder, which thankfully has enough resolution and scene coverage to make its inclusion worthwhile, although we would have liked an...

Nikon P7800 Review

The Nikon P7800 builds upon the well-regarded P7700 by adding an electronic viewfinder, improving the LCD panel and adding a few new features and tweaks, while keeping all the good stuff like a fairly long and fast 28-200mm eq. f/2-4 lens, great image...

Excellent image quality for a 1/1.7" sensor; Versatile 28-200mm eq. lens with fast f/2-4 max aperture; Built-in EVF; Fully articulating LCD; Generous set of physical controls; Built-in flash with wireless support; Standard dedicated hot shoe; Full HD...

Slow cycle times and buffer clearing with RAW files; Shallow burst mode buffer; Mediocre autofocus speed and shutter lag; Sluggish UI at times; Slow to switch to movie mode; Optical zoom not supported during movie recording when using manual exposure...

The Nikon P7800 is an intriguing breed that mixes compact portability with DSLR functionality, while not necessarily taking either capacity to any extreme. It does a number of things exceptionally well, with its class-leading image quality (at low...

Nikon Coolpix P7800 camera

The Nikon Coolpix P7800 is a compact camera that can do it all

Clear image quality ; Built-in EVF and flash ; Convenient manual controls

EVF looks too pale ; The function buttons don't share the same customisation options

Nikon's Coolpix P7800 is a good all-rounder. The lens can be used for macros and also for zoomed shots up to 200mm, and the end results are very good. Furthermore, it does a good job in auto mode, but it also has extensive manual controls.

Nikon P7800

Nikon's advanced compact has taken a serious wrong turn somewhere

Strong build quality, Impressive vari-angled LCD screen, Stand-out lens performance

Confused control set-up, Bulky and heavy, Sluggish operation

Nikon P7800 review

Premium compact gets upgraded with an EVF

Full manual control ; Articulating screen ; EVF

No touchscreen ; No Wi-Fi

Nikon has produced a very good compact camera and anyone purchasing it as a backup to a DSLR should be happy with. Similarly, anybody wanting to step up from a more basic point and shoot should also find a lot to like here.

Nikon Coolpix P7800 review

Nikon is on the up when it comes to its compact cameras. And if you're looking for a high-end model then the Coolpix P7800 may have already made it onto your shortlist, alongside similar models such as the Canon PowerShot G16. If you're after a...

28-200mm f/2.0-4.0 lens range and brightness, sharp images of a good quality, vari-angle screen, built-in viewfinder, physical controls

Chunky design won’t suit all, viewfinder quality limitations, price considering competition, some exposure oddities, no physical lens ring

If you're after a high-end compact camera with an abundance of features then the Nikon Coolpix P7800 certainly ticks all the boxes, but it just doesn't quite excel in every department. Good rather than great is the overall sentiment.
