Nikon Coolpix S10

Nikon continues the swiveling lens design that made the Coolpix cameras legendary. It all started with the Coolpix 900, one of the first cameras we ever reviewed back in 1998 and continued until 2002 with the Coolpix 4500 which Nikon said would be the...

Nikon Coolpix S10

If you're new to digital photography you may wish to read the Digital Photography Glossary before diving into this article (it may help you understand some of the terms used).

Unique twisting body design brings real creative versatility ; Very compact for a 10x zoom ; Decent resolution and fairly good detail capture at lower ISO settings ; Relatively 'natural' looking output - not over contrasty or over saturated ; Simple...

Slow focus (hunting) at longer focal lengths, in macro mode and in low light ; Some focus errors at long end of zoom and in macro mode ; Large screen and lack of grip makes for rather poor handling ; Too easy to accidentally knock the joystick and...

The Coolpix S10 follows in the footsteps of some of the most highly-rated compact cameras in digital photography's short history. I still remember reviewing the original Coolpix 900, a camera that quite literally set the standard by which all digital...

Nikon Coolpix S10

Strangely, Nikon didn't see fit to include any kind of manual exposure controls, which could've helped put this camera in a league with superzoom cameras such as Canon's Power Shot S3 IS . Instead, you have to rely on the camera's 15 scene modes and...

Solid, fast 10X optical zoom lens; flexible, swivel-body design; sensor-shift image stabilization.

No manual exposure controls; no flash compensation; noisy images at ISO 400 and above.

Nikon's S10 has some decent features, including a really nice lens, but it doesn't live up to its potential and can't compete with similarly priced superzooms.

Nikon Coolpix S10 Review

The Nikon Coolpix S10 is a return to the past in terms of design, with the retro twisting body being first seen on Coolpix models like the 900 and 950. Nikon have brought that design bang up...

It looks like a blast from the past, and sure enough the Nikon Coolpix S10 struggles to match the performance of similarly priced compacts today. It's not awful but it's far from great, and,...

Nikon Coolpix S10 Digital Camera - Hands-On Preview

Other features of the Coolpix S10 include 16 beginner-friendly Scene modes, plus a One-Touch Portrait button that combines Apical Ltd.'s "D-Lighting" exposure correction technology, Identix's face-priority AF, and an in-camera red-eye fix function, to...

Swivel design provides a significant compositional advantage ; 10x Nikkor zoom in a compact package ; Vibration reduction technology ; Face detection autofocus in Portrait mode ; In-Camera Red-Eye Fix ; D-Lighting to lighten underexposed subjects ;...

Severe chromatic aberration in the corners, Surprisingly bad optics. Only a few small areas in the frame are in focus at any time, LCD very hard to read outdoors, Very small, oddly shaped control buttons, Very stiff Shutter button, An awkward menu...

Nikon Coolpix S10

The S10 addresses many of the complaints I had with the S4, adding image stabilization, a higher resolution 2.5" LCD, and an improved movie mode. It also uses a proprietary lithium-ion battery instead of AAs. Other features include a 6 Megapixel CCD,...

Very good photo quality ; Unique swivel-lens design ; Optical image stabilization ; Large, sharp 2.5" LCD; good low light and outdoor visibility ; Powerful flash ; Tons of scene modes ; In-camera help system ; Handy D-Lighting and Best Shot Selector...

No manual controls ; Audio sync problem in movie mode ; Slow focusing at telephoto end; low light focusing was pretty lousy ; Image stabilization not available in movie mode (electronic only) ; Right thumb tends to rest on LCD, blocking view and...

If you want a fairly compact ultra zoom camera that can take some creative shots, then the Coolpix S10 is probably worth a look. If you want manual controls and lens accessories then it's probably not the best choice. While I'm not jumping up and down...

Nikon Coolpix S10 Review

Here is another compact ultra-zoom designed to appeal consumers by packing a 10X stabilized optical zoom lens into a compact body. While the Nikon Coolpix S10 manages to do so, it does it with very poor ergonomics which make using it rather frustrating.

Folds into compact size for 10X zoom, Good color accuracy, Excellent macro capability, Good build quality, Good flash range, Good LCD visibility

High image noise starting at ISO 400, Some corner softness, Optical distortion, Occasional over-exposure, Above average chromatic aberrations, Slow focusing at telephoto

Nikon Coolpix S10 Digital Camera Review

Coolpix S10 makes some significant improvements over its predecessor, the Coolpix S4, adding image stabilization, a stronger flash, a sharper LCD, and more. The lens doesn't extend or retract – it rotates 270 degrees relative to the monitor screen, and...

Nikon Coolpix S10 Digital Camera Review

Nikon's first consumer digicam was the swiveling lens Coolpix 900.

Overall, the S10's optical performance is about average (for compact P&S long-zoom digicams). Images are hue accurate (but slightly oversaturated) with virtually no noise in well-lit low-ISO outdoor scenes. Images shot in dim/low light tend to be...

Nikon Coolpix S10 6.0MP Digital Camera

Nikon recently announced 6 new digital cameras, including the S10. This camera is similar in design to their S4 released earlier this year, but has a few notable upgrades. Overall it's a good camera, but has a few downsides.

The S10 offers five different color modes at your disposal.

Product Specifications

Packing powerful imaging performance, 10x zoom capability and a stylish swivel design into compact dimensions, the COOLPIX S10 makes it easy to take great-looking shots from more imaginative angles. With a distinctive wave-surface design and a high-quality finish, the COOLPIX S10 is attractive as the images it achieves. But even more impressively, the COOLPIX S10 features 6.0-effective Megapixel image resolution as well as a built-in 38-380mm (35mm equivalent) 10x Zoom-Nikkor lens - making it easy to compose everything from close portraits to wide-open scenery with fine detail and vivid color. And because the distinctive camera body incorporates a swivel design for the lens, users can set their creativity free, holding the camera overhead to capture action over the crowd or composing from down low to get a different perspective, while the large, bright 2.5-inch LCD with a 170-degree viewing angle lets users frame the shot with accuracy. With the advantage of VR (Vibration Reduction) capability, the COOLPIX S10 allows users to overcome camera shake to take sharper, more stable pictures in a range of shooting situations. And as the camera offers increased light sensitivity up to impressive ISO 800, users can get great-looking results in lower light without the need for an extended exposure and select much faster shutter speeds when taking pictures of fast-moving subjects. The COOLPIX S10 additionally features a handy One-touch portrait button that provides direct access to three unique in-camera Nikon image innovations - Face Priority AF that automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix that can automatically overcome the red-eye effect sometimes caused by flash, and Nikon's D-Lighting that can rescue underexposed images or shots with too much back light. And the COOLPIX S10 takes convenience even further with its supplied lithium battery that can take hundreds of shots on a single charge and PictBridge compatibility that means there's no need to use a computer at all when printing - just connect the COOLPIX S10 straight to a PictBridge-compatible printer and print directly without delay. An ample choice of Scene modes makes operation even easier in a wide range of common shooting situations. Simply select the most appropriate mode and the COOLPIX S10 automatically determines and sets the optimum combination of settings. In all there are 15 Scene modes to choose from and 4 of them also feature Scene assist, which helps users to achieve more attractive composition. The COOLPIX S10 also adds new entertainment to photography with Nikon's Pictmotion function that lets users combine images, movies, music and visual styles for automatically produced audiovisual shows, in-camera. And because the LCD of the COOLPIX S10 has an impressively wide viewing angle of 170 degrees, it's easy for everyone to gather round and watch Pictmotion shows together. Like all other cameras in the highly popular COOLPIX range, the COOLPIX S10 also comes complete with Nikon's exclusive PictureProject software. Powerful, yet exceptionally user-friendly, PictureProject makes it a snap to transfer, organize, edit and share photos with family and friends.
