Nikon Coolpix S2

You know what the Nikon Coolpix S1 was really missing? Splash-proofedness. At least, that's what Nikon appears to be betting on with the release of the Coolpix S2, which shares the same featureset as its predecessor but comes in an all-weather...

Nikon Coolpix S2 review

Nikon Coolpix S2

Simple operation; face-recognition autofocus; postcapture correction of red-eye and exposure; versatile burst mode; time-lapse capabilities; water resistance.

Few manual controls; slow autofocus in dim light; average image quality; limited shutter-speed range.

Aimed squarely at snapshooters looking for a carefree pocketful, the ultracompact Nikon Coolpix S2 does all the hard work and delivers decent picture quality.

Nikon S2 Review

At the start of 2013, Nikon launched its S1 mirrorless camera, setting a new benchmark for 1-series affordability. Almost a year and a half later, the 14-megapixel Nikon S2 follows in that camera's footsteps, and while it can no longer technically be...

Nikon Coolpix S2

The slim Nikon Coolpix S2 is the latest addition to the Nikon Coolpix collection of 2005. It appears that the Nikon Coolpix S2 will not replace the Nikon Coolpix S1 as it packs the same 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom lens, large 2.5 inch LCD and the...

Stylish and thin camera design ; All-weather body ; Battery level indicator ; Large 2.5 inch LCD ; The 4 features in the paragraph above ; Lots of scene modes ; Camera help ; Constant focusing reduces shutter lag

12 MB internal memory ; Weak flash ; Lack of manual controls ; Very small shutter speed range ; Barrel distortion

While the Nikon Coolpix S2 is a great camera when it comes to continuous shooting, still images and scene modes, it lacks "real" manual controls and it's shutter speeds are too slow/fast.

A fairly average camera that has a few things to offer, but suffers from poor picture quality. There are other models in a comparable price range that offer much better images.

Snappy performance, stylish design

Blurred pictures, requires a cradle for connection to a PC

The compact Coolpix S2 from Nikon suffers from one unfortunate flaw that makes it very difficult to recommend - it takes average photos at best. Whil...

Nikon Coolpix S2 digital camera

Svelte, stylishly cool digicams are all the rage at the moment with Sony and now Nikon following the trend-setting Konica Minolta X-series models with a slim, upright style camera featuring periscope-like, folded optic lens technology.

Stylish digicam sealed against the elements with good resolution and folded optic 3x optical zoom lens.

Small controls make handling a tad fiddly with some image quality issues.

Given my grumbles you'd be forgiven for thinking I don't like this camera, not so. It's a gem, if a little flawed around the edges. Anyone making standard sized prints from its images will be more than happy with its results and it is so nice to look...

Nikon Coolpix S2

The S2 is clearly an upgrade from the S1 with more features and slightly better performance.

Weatherproof ; D-Lighting function ; In-camera red-eye fix ; Face-priority autofocus

Prone to lingering fingerprints ; Poor performance of D-Lighting function for night pictures

Without any form of image stabiliser, our pictures taken at night turned out to be blurry with ghoulish trails. A blur warning function in the form of a blinking red hand appears on the LCD when the camera is unstable and the unit promptly asks for the...

NIKON COOLPIX S2 ]

The face area of the camera is about the same as a credit card and it is 25mm thick. It is made of aluminium and feels durable. There is no optical viewfinder but there is a large 65mm LCD screen that has one remarkable feature – it is actually visible...

The S2 has a clever little trick up its sleeve called “D Lighting”. When you take the once-in-a-lifetime picture and it is underexposed the camera can process the shot to bring out lost detail in a selective way so that lightening the shadows, for...

There are no manual controls at all in the S2, apart from ISO sensitivity, white balance and exposure compensation. This level of simplicity will appeal to some but deter a serious photographer

The fashion accessory camera is a crowded sector of the market and the latest generation of cameras has, to some extent, overcome the problems that occur when there is no viewfinder. The quality of images from these little point-and-shoot cameras is...
