Nikon Coolpix S8100 (Black)

The Coolpix S8100 compact megazoom is Nikon's follow-up to the Coolpix S8000 . That camera didn't offer much more than what you could get from other manufacturers--if anything--and produced average photos and had average shooting performance. Its...

Excellent shooting performance; great LCD; stereo mic; 10x zoom in an attractive compact body.

Soft photos on either side of ISO 200; white balance is a little off; no manual or semimanual shooting modes.

With fast performance, good photos, and an excellent feature-to-price ratio, the Nikon Coolpix S8100 is a compact megazoom worth considering.

Nikon S8100

The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is based around a backside-illuminated CMOS image sensor with an effective resolution of 12.1 megapixels. BSI sensors place their circuitry on the reverse (non-light gathering) side of the image sensor, offering up more of the...

12.1-megapixel BSI CMOS sensor ; Very good 10x Nikkor ED VR optical zoom lens ; 30-300mm eq. lens is reasonably wide with good telephoto reach ; Very fast shutter lag, rivaling digital SLRs ; Solid feel, comfortable grip ; Very simple control layout ;...

Few manual options ; No dedicated battery charger ; Output compartment door seems flimsy ; Charging port is difficult to reach ; Below-average battery life ; Hard-to-reach on/off button ; Soft corners at wide-angle ; Bright chromatic aberration at wide...

Flash: Our manufacturer-specified testing (shown at right) is bright at 13 feet, but the camera raised ISO to 455 to boost exposure. The telephoto test also came out bright at 8.2 feet, though with a considerable ISO boost to 712.

Nikon Coolpix S8100

The Nikon Coolpix S8100 is a speedy ultra-zoom that performs well even in dim settings, reviews say. Packed with a 12-megapixel CMOS sensor for less image noise, the S8100 displays better low-light versatility than most shooters, but "textures...

Good low-light performance, full 1080p high-definition video, sharp LCD resolution, can zoom while shooting video

Soft images, lacks shutter and aperture priority modes, noisy zoom motor in video mode, poorly placed pop-up flash

"Lens error after 1 year"

Disappointed that this camera is having problems when I have owned it for a relatively short time. Would not recommend or buy again.

Large screen, easy to use, loved the video, and the camera is small.

After about a year, I kept getting a 'lens error' message. Horrible to have happen in the middle of a trip to Spain. Took out battery and replaced--didn't help. Lens kept going in and out. Couldn't turn off. Lens cover made of cheap plastic.

"Great camera for me."

It's hard for me to think of something negative to say about this camera. I've been using it since Nov.2011 and have gotten used to the flash placement and focusing. This camera excells in low light due to the CMOS senser. It captures more detail than...

Long Battery life. The Zoom works great and doesn't distort my subject. Movies are high quality in 720 res. Viewing Software is top shelf. Low light pictures are so vivid. Grippy surface is easy to hold.921,000 dot screen is the best of any Ive seen.

I miss a viewfinder for bright daylight or public events.

"Poor Quality Control, Abysmal Customer Service"

Purchased camera for Christmas. Camera began to scroll, erratically, at about day 100. Problem continued; contacted Nikon at about day 110. Sent camera to Nikon, Nikon claims camera is 'damaged'(100 images, maybe, max, since holiday...). Nikon will not...

None, None at all.

Shoddy Quality, No service after the sale

"Got on Black Friday. Would buy at original price."

Many people keep saying that "the flash location is bad, blah blah." only someone that is 12 would have a problem with that. Honestly, its not that hard to just move your finger. anyways, it's kind of hard to miss it. People need to get real. Probably...

Everything about the camera. I have fun going outside, and take far away pictures; it amazes me how the pictures turn out even 40-50 feet away. Greet for a football game, vacation,up close or anything really. This is above and beyond what I expected.

nothing. love it!!

"Fantastic for both point&shoot and more advanced photos"

I have had this camera for almost a year now and love it. The flash placement is ridiculously frustrating, but the pros more than make up for it. The HD shooting is awesome, as is all of the advanced shooting options. I was torn between the...

The night portrait and night landscape shooting modes work surprisingly well.

Very awkward flash placement. It is way too easy to block the flash from popping up without even knowing it.

"Bad Battery Life"

After doing a lot of research I bought this camera to replace my old Cannon (which I loved, but has a postage stamp size viewer). I have been happy with the photo and video quality, but extremely dissapointed in how the camera functions. I have the...

Great Pictures

Extremely Short Battery Life

"Camera Broke under warranty NIKON refused to repair."

The cable which operated the zoom function of this camera broke. I sent it in for warranty repair..and NIKON immediately claimed "water damage"..This camera was well maintained and never even came near water.. I have since found out this is a common...
