Olympus FE-5050 review

Want a digital camera that offers broader creative flexibility than your phone's tiny built-in lens, yet don't have much more than two beans to rub together? Topping a trio of recently released FE-series point and shoots from Olympus is the attractive...

Affordable, slender pocket sized proportions, attractive finish, decent resolution, 5x optical zoom

Shooting modes inexplicably hidden, variable white balance performance, camera shake and image blur unpreventable, zoom disabled when recording video

There’s not a lot here that we haven’t seen before and done better elsewhere. Still the Magic Filters are fun, the broader than average focal range is useful, the build is more solid than expected and the price is affordable

Olympus FE-5050 review

The Olympus FE-5050 is a low-cost, 14-megapixel point-and-shoot with a wild side. The camera's punk-effect filter may be an inspired flourish, but image quality is variable and critical sharpness mostly lacking.

Inexpensive ; Truly compact ; High resolution and broader than average focal range ; Robust construction ; Punk 'magic filter

Image quality merely average ; No handgrip, so tricky to hold steady and avoid camera shake

At around £120, the Olympus FE-5050 is a reasonably attractive, low-budget point-and-shoot option. It throws some fun effects filters into the mix, which manage to raise its game slightly, but there are still better digital cameras out there. If you're...

Olympus FE-5050

The latest budget ultra-compact from Olympus has 5x wide-angle zoom and a 14MP sensor.

The Olympus FE-5050 is a refreshing change for what was previously a rather disappointing line of cameras. It is very compact, well made, and the vastly improved interface is very easy to use. It's a bit light on features, but overall performance is...

Olympus - FE-5050

The Olympus FE range of compact digital cameras has been designed to be chic, lightweight and practical, and the two latest versions - the FE-5040 and the FE-5050 - continue in the same tradition. The FE-5050 ...

If you already own the FE-5030 you may not feel the need to upgrade, as most changes are minimal apart from the much improved in-display navigation. But if you haven't discovered this series yet, the FE-5050 is cool, lightweight and easy to operate.

Absolute rubbish!! Don't buy it

We bought this camera to replace an Olympus model that we loved but which was stolen. The camera is terrible. We are forever trying to find a setting that does not have massive light interference or make the pictures totally out of focus. The auto...
