Olympus FE-300

The Olympus FE-300 represents an emerging class of digital cameras targeted at the beginner wooed by double-digit megapixels. At 12 megapixels, the FE-300 is one of several cameras that reach an all-time high resolution for point-and-shoots. When...

12-megapixel resolution ; Low noise and high dynamic range at ISO 50 and 100 ; Lightweight, portable design ; Innovative Perfect Shot Preview for advanced point-and-shooters ; Included Shooting Guide for beginners

Poor color and white balance accuracy ; High noise levels and poor dynamic range above ISO 100 ; Painfully slow processing time ; Blurring at the edges of the frame ; Uneven flash ; Uneasy handling and flash/shutter positioning ; Scattered menu system...

2007 is the year manufacturers thrusted 12-megapixel resolutions into point-and-shoots. With hopes that the alluring high megapixel count would be enough to win over consumers, competing cameras came from every major manufacturer. But the 12-megapixel...

Pixel count isn't everything. While a 12-megapixel picture can potentially hold more details than an 8- or 10-megapixel picture, that doesn't mean it always will. As you try to cram more and more pixels onto a small sensor, problems like noise tend to...

Slim, light design; Perfect Shot Preview is a handy feature.

performance; poor picture quality, especially at high ISOs.

The Olympus FE-300 stands out as a surprisingly small, inexpensive 12-megapixel shooter, though its pictures aren't as impressive as its price.

Olympus FE-300 Review

Around 200 (less, with Internet deals) for a good looking, stylishly designed 12 megapixel zoom compact from a well-known brand looks like a great deal on paper almost too good to be true. And so ...

Stuffing extra megapixels into entry-level cameras is a tactic manufacturers use to lure consumers. However, more resolution doesn't necessarily mean sharper photos. Our resolution test shows the Olympus FE-300 takes images that are sharp in the center...

Olympus FE-300 Review

The Olympus FE-300 is the current flagship of the entry level FE line of digital cameras from Olympus.

Solid metal body with nice styling ; Plenty of resolution in LCD ; Good battery life ; Easy to use

Average image quality ; No "fun" features that appeal to the target market, like color filters ; Noisy flash shots (especially when camera increases sensitivity to ISO800)

The Olympus FE-300 provides a whopping 12 megapixels of resolution, but don't let the thought that "more is better" enter your mind when deciding about whether to buy this camera.  With this camera, all that 12 megapixels gets you is large files and...

Product Specifications

Want to do more for less? With a giant 12.0 Megapixels, the Olympus FE-300 is the solution. Encased in a slim, metal body, this model doesn't compromise functionality for simplicity. A bright 3x optical zoom together with a large 6.4cm LCD make framing shots a breeze. Meanwhile, BrightCapture Technology works to improve results in low-light conditions. The integration of the powerful TruePic III image processor puts unprecedented power and image quality at your fingertips. So that high performance doesn't translate to difficulty, the FE-300 features the "One button, one function" design principle. Together with a built-in guide function, it ensures the greatest of photographic ease and flexibility. With 17 scene modes including Candle, Fireworks or Portrait, you may never have to manually adjust a setting. And using the integrated Face Detection Technology, the inventive Smile Shot mode even recognizes faces in a scene and then automatically releases the shutter when subjects smile. Meanwhile, an eight-step mode dial means you're never more than a few clicks away from the appropriate camera mode. What's more, high ISO settings minimize the chance of blur caused by camera shake, and 25 languages on board ensure that menus are easily navigable for virtually everyone. Equipped with both internal memory and an xD-Picture Card slot, the FE-300 is ready to capture both still shots and movies with sound up to memory capacity. And the Olympus Master software including the Muvee Pack trial version makes it a cinch to transfer, edit and archive images on a personal computer.
