Olympus FE-4050 review

Can you pick up a reasonable digital compact for less than £100, if only by a penny? Past experience has suggested not. So will the Olympus FE-4050 be the camera to force us to re-examine our prejudices and take a good, long hard look at ourselves?

Simple point and shoot operation, inexpensive, fun Magic Filter digital effects

Basic feature set, no HD video, optical zoom disabled when recording movies, plastic-y feel, slightly bulkier than the FE-5050

The FE-4050 is a bit of a toy at this price, and there’s a higher degree of plastic in the build than the FE-5050 at £30 more. There’s a little difference in image quality however, between the two, so some may consider the FE-4050 the better deal

Olympus FE-4050 review

The user-friendly Olympus FE-4050 is a marginally pared-down version of its big brother, the FE-5050, with slightly wider dimensions and a more plasticky build.

Affordable ; Point-and-shoot simplicity ; Magic filter' digital effects are fun

Inevitable plasticky feel ; Optical zoom disabled when shooting VGA movie clips ; Some loss of sharpness at maximum wide-angle setting

The Olympus FE-4050 may be relatively unsophisticated, in that it doesn't allow much more than point-and-shoot operation, but its 'magic filters' are certainly a neat touch. It's slightly bizarre that Olympus hasn't included a dedicated shooting-mode...

Olympus FE-4050 review

Daniel Bell takes a look at the Olympus FE-4050, a budget compact camera with a 4x optical zoom and 12Mp sensor.

Easy to use; Small and light; 4x optical zoom

Noise evident through the ISO range
