Olympus Stylus 740 (Silver)

Both cameras performed nearly identically in our lab tests, save for one quirk: the Stylus 740 is slightly faster than the 750 in shot-to-shot time when the onboard flash is enabled. The 740 registered a 3.3-second flash recycle time, while the 750...

Decent image quality; comfortable design.

Few manual controls; sluggish performance.

It's a bit slow, and control freaks will be disappointed, but the Olympus Stylus 740 is still a very nice snapshot camera.

Olympus Stylus 740 Digital Camera - Express Review

Slim and light, the Olympus Stylus 740 has stunningly good looks, a unique menu system, a 5x zoom, and an all-weather chassis. The Stylus 740's 2.5 inch screen is bright and vibrant indoors, but more difficult to use outdoors, even on cloudy days. We...

Stylish, ultra-compact design, Large 2.5 inch LCD, All-weather seals and gaskets, Optional underwater case, 7.1 megapixels, 5x optical zoom with up to 28x total zoom, Anti-blur image processing, Live histogram, Help system

Severe chromatic aberration in the corners, Surprisingly bad optics. Only a few small areas in the frame are in focus at any time, LCD very hard to read outdoors, Very small, oddly shaped control buttons, Very stiff Shutter button, An awkward menu...

Autofocus is via contrast detection, and ISO sensitivity ranges from 80 to 1,600 equivalent (2,500 being the maximum in some scene modes), and can be controlled automatically, or manually. The Olympus 740 also offers what the company calls "Digital...

Olympus introduces Stylus 740

The new Olympus Style 740 is a great camera for those who were looking into buying the popular Stylus 750, but didn(tm)t because of the features it had that added to the cost and that were not going to be used by the casual user. The new 740 is very...

Olympus Stylus 740 Digital

Anyone who wants to get close to the action should take a good look at the Stylus 740 Digital from Olympus. This camera features a new 5x zoom lens, which is great for scrutinising objects that are a bit further away, and a 7.1 million pixel CCD for...

Olympus Stylus 740

We so happened to review the Olympus Stylus 740 the same time we reviewed the Stylus 720 SW. Both are modern 7.1 megapixel cameras that are relatively comparable in size. So why does Olympus offer two such seemingly almost identical cameras? Because...

Small and light 7.1 megapixel camera with hi-res LCD, Weather-proofed to handle splashes, a bit of rain and snow, Great 5X zoom, superb image stabilization, Optional PT-034 underwater case good for 133 feet diving, Love the many scene modes and the...

Strictly point & shoot, Use of underwater wide-angle modes requires practice, Somewhat odd-looking wedge design, Uses often hard-to-find xD-Picture Card

However, nothing is ever totally clear-cut, and as our review went on, we grew to like the Stylus 740 more and more. But first we had to get over some prejudices. It is definitely not as handsome as the 720 SW. The big zoom lens dominates the front of...

Strictly point & shoot, Use of underwater wide-angle modes requires practice, Somewhat odd-looking wedge design, Uses often hard-to-find xD-Picture Card

In its own right, the Stylus 740 is a moden digicam that has a whole lot going for it. It is very small and light, yet offers the most desirable 5X optical zoom and comes with a very high-resolution LCD that greatly helps in figuring out which pictures...

"Design Flaw"

This would be a good camera for everyday use, but I will not buy another Olympus until they make the battery cover stronger that it will not break from just opening and closing the battery cover. Their warranty is worthless as they will claim that you...

The Macro Mode is better than most cameras and the video had better sound than other cameras

The Olympus Stylus Cameras has one major design flaw which is the battery cover. A piece of cheap plastic is screwed onto a metal hinge and when you push the hinge closed the plastic is what keeps the door closed. It eventually breaks w/normal use

Owners Opinion: Olympus Stylus 740 (xcaret, 13 Aug 07)

I bought this camera with airmile reward points after my olympus d395 got broken when slamed in my rv door. Since it was 3.2 meg ,it was good to find the 740 with better zoom feature .I liked it when I took it out of the box ,charged the battery and...

Now for my gripes ; The battery you get is rechargable and to buy a spare it costs $65.00 here in Alberta.(the old one used AA's ,and we have lots) ; The camera is very sleek and can very easilly slip out of your hand (and has) ; The worst thing is in...

"Stylish and Poor"

On a sunny day the LCD screen is useless. You just have to guess what you are shooting. Indoor flash photos are blurry if your subjects move (ie children). The controls are not intuitive. Well not worth $209.

small and compact

useless outside

Product Specifications

The Stylus 740 is the thinnest 5x optical zoom camera in its class, and it boasts all the quality features you expect from a Stylus. With an amazing 28x total zoom, Digital Image Stabilization (DIS) and Bright Capture technology, you'll capture near-perfect images every time. The 740's cool ultra-slim design doesn't limit the powerful performance you've come to expect from a Stylus. It has 5x optical and 5.6x digital zoom for an impressive 28x total zoom. DIS helps prevent camera shake and fast moving subjects from blurring your images. Get sharper images with high ISO and fast shutter speeds. Like all Stylus cameras, weatherproof engineering will protect your camera in the rain, at the beach and on the slopes. See it before you shoot it! When you're snapping pictures, your subject will be clear and bright, even in dimly lit conditions. And now you can experience Bright Capture Movie when taking QuickTime movies with sound.
