Olympus SP-565 UZ Review

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., August 25, 2008 - Olympus has given the SP-570 UZ - the world's most powerful ultra zoom digital camera - an extreme makeover by creating the new SP-565 Ultra Zoom, a smaller and lighter version with the same amazing...

Olympus SP-565 UZ Digital Camera First Impressions Review

The Olympus SP-565 UZ boasts an extraordinary zoom range, a full 20x magnification equivalent to a huge 26 - 520mm zoom in 35mm photography, all in a compact 13-ounce body. The camera offers a full range of automatic and manual options, making it...

- Impressive zoom capability. - Nice balance of manual and auto controls - Easy to use for beginners and advanced users alike. - Reasonably priced.

- The viewfinder screen looks pixelated. - Not much of a grip on the left side.

At $400, the SP-565 UZ is a bit more expensive than the average point-and-shoot, and clearly bulkier, but it offers much more functionality. Adecent 20x zoom lens alone on a full-sized SLR would be far more expensive than the entire Olympus SP-565 UZ...

Olympus SP-565 UZ Review

The Olympus SP-565 UZ is the latest addition to Olympus' now extensive line-up of ultra-zoom digital cameras. The star attraction of the SP 565 UZ is its 20x, 26-520mm zoom lens, covering everything from wide-angle landscapes to close-up action shots,...

The Olympus SP-565 UZ feels more like a consolidation and evolution of existing big zoom products rather than a great leap forward, with a launch price that closely matches that of the SP-570UZ when introduced (with the just announced 26x zoom, 12...

Olympus SP-565 UZ Review

The smallest and lightest of Olympus's current ultrazooms, the Olympus SP-565UZ represents a minor update to its sibling, the 570UZ.

Full feature set addressing the needs of experienced photographers as well as the snapshooters ; Helpful on-board user guide ; Decent performance on several levels ; Natural-looking colors ; Good detail capture at low ISO settings ; Base ISO of 64

Lens distortion at extreme focal lengths ; Tendency to clip highlights in high contrast shots ; Relatively small (2.5 inch) LCD compared to other Olympus superzooms ; Purple fringing along high contrast edges ; Only two levels of JPEG image compression

Going up the ISO ladder, of course, increases image noise. Visible shadow noise becomes evident at about ISO 200 but even the amount of image noise at ISO 400 will deliver very nice prints. At ISO 800 and 1600, you should keep prints at snapshot size...

Olympus SP-565UZ Digital Camera Review

Picture, if you will, a standard digital SLR with a sleek black body, protruding lens and a pop-up flash, and now shrink it. The SP-565UZ is a palm-sized, 10 mega pixel compact camera with a fixed, external auto focus 20 times (yes, 20 times) optical...

Being on the smaller side, it could have been useful to have a rubber thumb grip pad provided (there is one for your fingers) on the plastic body to further increase stability and security in-hand but overall, the SP-565UZ is an attractive...

Amazing experience makes me feel pro

I have just moved from a Canon A590 IS to this. Being my first semi-SLR, this camera has been good fun. I was lucky to go on a trip to Goa soon after I bought this & I explored the camera's potential 100%. I have some amazing photos though it took some...

Excellent super zoom for amatures...great range of options

Need to invest some time on learning about it & need a tripod

Product Specifications

The SP-565 UZ is the ultimate portable zoom camera. With a 20x wide-angle zoom lens it zooms in for extreme close-ups or out for panoramic shooting. A high-speed sequential mode lets you shoot rapid-fire to capture every action-packed moment. The powerful, ultra-compact lens gives you unmatched shooting versatility. The amazing 20x optical zoom brings you closer to the action, and the wide-angle lens captures more in your picture. Forget about blurry shots with this 2-in-1 anti-blur solution. Sensor-shift image stabilization compensates for camera shake to keep your shots steady while digital image stabilization captures crisp, clear images in any situation. Tracks up to 16 faces and automatically focuses and optimizes exposures for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures. Take several shots in rapid succession with just one click. With a burst rate of up to 13.5 fps (3MP), you can practically freeze time to capture every moment of the action. As soon as the focus is locked, pre-capture automatically archives ten frames (3MP) before fully pressing the button to capture the perfect shot.
