Olympus SP-600UZ

As with many things in life, expectations play a big part in whether you'll like the Olympus SP-600UZ. The two main attractions are its wide-angle lens with 15x zoom and its price; it can easily be found for less than $200. The rest of its features,...

Nice features, design for its price; 1GB of built-in storage; one-touch movie recording.

Soft, noisy photos above ISO 200; long shutter lag; ineffective image stabilization.

The Olympus SP-600UZ is easy on your wallet for a megazoom, but its photos and performance require a lot of compromise.

Olympus SP-600UZ

The Olympus SP-600UZ is a 12-megapixel superzoom camera that covers a 15x zoom range. It's the little brother to the 30x zoom SP-800UZ and offers a number of similar features.

Like other superzoom cameras in this price range, the SP-600UZ has its positive and negative points. On the negative side, there’s no ability to zoom while shooting video – even if it is 720p that you’re capturing. While I can understand Olympus’...

Review: SnorePro SP-600

If you stay up late enough I'm sure you can watch a ton of infomercials all with promises of products which will make you more beautiful, whiten your teeth or will help you shed pounds all while eating what you want. Of course, there are also...

"Amazing... Except for the batteries."

Its a really good camera, don't get me wrong. I love it and wouldn't change it for a different one, It's perfect for what I use it for (pictures of my tort) but the batteries thing REALLY gets me down about it.

Amazingly detailed pictures, Epic zoom proportion.

It takes batteries. I absolutely hate the fact that it takes batteries, I don't know about anybody else, but mine eats batteries alive. Hubby says get the rechargeable batteries, but it doesn't matter, my camera will go through 4 batteries a week.

"Point and shooter wanted more of a challenge."

Over all I am very happy with this camera. I am a point and shooter who wanted a little more challenge. It took me awhile of frustration to realize that low lighting can cause more of a lag on the shutter speed. Lost several good photo ops the other...

Good quality photos. Easy to change options. The video quality is great. Sounds and video are good quality, you just have to stop the recording to zoom in or out and restart. I am impressed with the stabilization with full zoom and video.

No option to change shutter speed. It would be nice to have a setting where the shutter speed would be faster, even if you loose an option someplace else.

Good entry level camera

Good entry level camera. DOes the basics pretty well. I sometimes wish I had waited and did a little more research. It came on sale and I needed something NOW. Overall I am fairly happy with the unit. It has taken some amazing pictures, it does lack...

1. Nice size view screen ; 2. fairly easy to flip through modes ; 3. HELP button with good feaures ; 4. has that SLR feel when shooting pictures - for those that don't like shooting pictures with a "deck of cards ; styleof camera

1. Video mode - no zoom with audio, only zoom without audio (that sucks) ; 2. Lens cap falls off easily - won't stay on when lens is extended (that sucks) - do not bang your lens ; 3. picture quality ok - I expected better ; 4. Hard time downloading...

Firmware crash ruined European vacation pics.

I bought this as a bridge camera for my trip to Europe. First day into trip, camera locked up, displayed NO FONTS on every page, so that I couldn't adjust anything because I couldn't read the menus. Reverted to 640X480 on all my photos. Contacted...

Easy to operate. Great zoom steadycam

No shutter priority. Firmware crash while on vacation in Europe resulted in NO FONTS on menus, so unable to read menus. One-in-a-lifetime photos reverted to 640X480

Product Specifications

The Olympus SP-600UZ is a fantastic high-end ultrazoom camera. It comes with a whopping 15x optical zoom, which is great for taking pictures from just about anywhere. Digital image stabilization makes it easy to find the shot you want, even with the full zoom on. It takes 12 MP images, one of the largest picture sizes available in ultrazoom cameras. The SP-600UZ can also take 720p, high-definition video. Unique to this range of Olympus cameras is 1 GB of built-in internal memory, something many cameras lack. Additionally, some unique settings, such as a mode that turns pictures into line drawings, are nice little added features that aren't terribly important, but that do make the camera a little nicer. This camera takes good pictures, has an amazing zoom level, and is overall a good buy.
